Chapter 4 - The Eviction Notice

David slammed the steering wheel of the BMW as he pulled into the underground parking garage of the downtown luxury high-rise. His shirt was soaked through with cold sweat, his tie askew. Evelyn sat in the passenger seat, hyperventilating into a silk handkerchief, while Megan occupied the back, scrolling frantically through social media to see if word of the clinic disaster had leaked into their social circles.
"That lying, thieving parasite," Evelyn rasped, her face pale under heavy foundation. "Five hundred thousand dollars, David! Your entire liquidity reserve! How could you let that little nobody swindle our family out of our future?"
"Shut up, Mother!" David shouted, his voice hoarse from two hours of screaming in the hospital parking lot. "Allison is gone, her apartment is already empty, and the police said it’s a civil dispute until we file formal charges. Right now, we go upstairs, we shower, and we figure out how to sell Catherine’s jewelry to cover the payroll for my firm."
He grabbed his leather briefcase, determined to salvage whatever pride he had left. At least the penthouse condo was his. He had forced Catherine to sign it over, leaving her with nothing but two mouths to feed and zero financial backing. In his mind, he was still the victor of the divorce.
They rode the private elevator up to the 42nd floor in tense silence. But when the brushed-steel doors slid open into the private foyer, David froze.
Two burly men in dark utility jumpsuits were standing in the hallway, accompanied by a woman in a sharp gray pantsuit holding a digital tablet and a set of heavy industrial master locks. Stacked neatly against the wall were three sealed cardboard boxes labeled D. Coleman — Personal Effects (Apparel Only).
"What the hell is going on here?" David demanded, stepping out of the elevator. "Who authorized you to be on my property?"
The woman in the gray suit adjusted her glasses and stepped forward, completely unfazed by his aggression. "Mr. David Coleman?"
"Yes, I am David Coleman. And this is my private residence. Get out before I have building security throw you into the street!"
"I am Sarah Lin, senior asset recovery manager for Apex Sovereign Holdings," the woman said in a crisp, measured tone. "Building security let us up under the authority of an emergency repossession warrant signed by Judge Miller at 11:30 this morning."
Megan pushed past her brother, her voice rising to a shriek. "Are you insane? My brother just finalized his divorce! His ex-wife signed the deed over to him two hours ago! This place belongs to the Coleman family!"
Sarah Lin offered a faint, icy smile. "Your ex-wife surrendered her personal occupancy rights, Mr. Coleman. She could not sign over a deed she never personally owned. The deed to Penthouse 42B has been held exclusively by Apex Sovereign Holdings since 2018. Mrs. Catherine Moreau-Coleman was the sole authorized resident under a zero-cost family trust agreement. The moment her name was removed from the lease registry upon dissolution of marriage, the trust’s occupancy clause terminated immediately."
David felt the blood drain from his face until his lips turned blue. "Apex Sovereign? What are you talking about? I paid the maintenance fees! I paid the property tax out of the household account!"
"You transferred funds into an escrow account managed by Mrs. Coleman’s personal accountants," Sarah Lin replied, handing him a thick, certified legal packet. "Those funds covered fractional utility overhead. As of 12:01 p.m., the primary leaseholder has vacated, and the property has been reclaimed for immediate private listing. You have ten minutes to collect those three boxes containing your clothing. All artwork, furniture, electronics, and fixtures remain the property of the holding company."
"No! My watch collection is inside!" David lunged toward the double doors, but the two security contractors stepped smoothly into his path, blocking the entrance with immovable bulk. "My safe! Everything I own is in that master bedroom!"
"The safe was opened under legal supervision," Sarah Lin said calmly. "All items purchased prior to the marriage using trust capital have been cataloged and placed in international transit. The items purchased during the marriage have been seized pending the court-ordered asset audit triggered by your ex-wife's legal team. If you touch that door handle, Mr. Coleman, you will be arrested for felony criminal trespass."

Evelyn collapsed against the mirrored wall of the elevator, clutching her chest. "David... the car... tell me we still have the car..."
Sarah Lin didn't even look up from her tablet. "The repossession team for the BMW is currently towing the vehicle from bay 14. The corporate lease was cancelled forty minutes ago. Have a pleasant afternoon, Mr. Coleman."
