Chapter 7 - Public Humiliation

Evelyn Coleman refused to believe the news.
Sitting in the cramped motel room surrounded by cheap plastic furniture, the Coleman matriarch paced back and forth, clutching her faux-pearl necklace so tightly the string threatened to snap.
"It’s a trick, David!" Evelyn screeched, her voice echoing off the thin drywall. "That mousy, quiet girl isn't a billionaire! She didn't have a single diamond when you married her! Her father was an old man who lived in a cabin in Vermont!"
"Her father owned three thousand acres in Vermont, Mother!" David screamed back, sitting on the edge of a stained bed with his head in his hands. "He was Henri Moreau’s younger brother! They lived off the grid by choice! She lived among us as an ordinary person because she wanted to see if I truly loved her!"
Megan stormed in through the door, clutching her phone with white knuckles. "It’s on Bloomberg, David. It’s on the front page of every financial outlet in Europe and America."
She threw the tablet onto the bed. On the screen was a high-resolution photograph taken that morning at the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois in Basel.
There stood Catherine.
She was dressed in an impeccable emerald-green tailored suit, her dark hair swept up in an elegant French twist, radiating undeniable authority, beauty, and wealth. Beside her stood the Minister of Commerce and three international shipping magnates. Standing respectfully behind her chair was Thomas Vance, holding a file titled Global Strategic Expansion.
The headline read: "C. Moreau Assumes Direct Command of $40 Billion Maritime Empire After Eight-Year Absence."
Below the main headline, a subsidiary ticker flashed across the screen: Coleman Logistics Default Triggers Immediate Liquidation of Regional Assets.
"No..." Megan whined, sinking to the linoleum floor. "No, this can't be happening. We could have been royalty! We could have had access to their private islands, their charity galas, their private jets! David, you idiot, why did you let Allison into your bed?"
"You told me to leave her!" David roared, jumping to his feet. "You and Mother told me every single day that Catherine was holding me back! You called her useless! You said she couldn't even give this family a boy!"
"Because she didn't tell us who she was!" Evelyn shrieked defensively, her face mottled red with fury and greed. "She lied to us! She trapped my brilliant son! If she had billions, she owed it to this family to share it! We took care of her for eight years!"
Before David could respond, a heavy knock rattled the motel door.
David pulled it open. Standing outside were two uniformed county sheriffs accompanied by a process server holding a stack of blue legal folders.
"David Coleman? Evelyn Coleman? Megan Coleman?" the lead deputy asked, checking a clipboard.
"What now?" David mumbled, his spirit completely broken.
May you like
"You are being formally served with a global civil fraud lawsuit, an emergency commercial garnishment order, and a Grand Jury subpoena for commercial extortion regarding the diverted trust accounts," the process server stated, thrusting three thick packets into their hands. "Additionally, Mr. Coleman, the District Attorney's financial crimes unit has issued an immediate freeze on all domestic assets linked to your social security number. You are required to surrender your passport within forty-eight hours."
Evelyn let out a high-pitched wail and collapsed onto the motel carpet, the fake pearls finally snapping and scattering across the dirty floor like worthless plastic beads.
