Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

Six months later, the marble corridors of the Federal District Court in New York were quiet as the bailiff called case number 409-CV: Moreau Global vs. Coleman et al.

David sat at the public defender’s wooden defense table wearing an oversized, wrinkled gray suit provided by a charity outreach center. Across from him sat Thomas Vance and a formidable lineup of six senior corporate litigators representing the Moreau trust.

Judge Harrison adjusted his reading glasses, reviewing the thick binder containing forensic audit findings, forged medical documents, and corporate default records.

"The evidence presented in this matter is incontrovertible," Judge Harrison declared, his deep voice resounding through the high-ceilinged courtroom. "The defendant, David Coleman, deliberately transferred co-mingled capital and fraudulent loans from holding shell companies to finance unauthorized third-party expenditures, while simultaneously defaulting on international maritime freight obligations totaling twelve point four million dollars."

Evelyn sat in the back row of the gallery, weeping silently into a paper napkin.

"Furthermore," the judge continued, "the cross-claim filed by the defendant seeking retroactive alimony, joint custody rights, and trust partition is dismissed with prejudice. The divorce decree executed in the state of New York on October 14th was executed voluntarily, with explicit waiver clauses signed by the defendant himself."

The judge struck his wooden gavel against the sound block with a sharp, echoing crack.

"Judgment is entered in favor of the plaintiff in the amount of $12,450,000 in restitution and compensatory damages. All remaining personal assets, domestic holdings, and prospective income streams of the defendant shall be subject to mandatory garnishment until the debt is satisfied in full. A separate criminal referral for commercial conspiracy has been forwarded to the United States Attorney’s office."

David sat paralyzed, staring blankly at the polished mahogany table. The number was astronomical—a debt so colossal that three lifetimes of hard labor could never repay it. He was thirty-four years old, penniless, disgraced, and marked as a convicted commercial fraudster for the rest of his natural life.

Allison Vance had already been sentenced to four years at a state correctional facility for medical fraud and grand larceny. Megan was working two minimum-wage retail shifts to avoid her own garnishment orders, having cut all communication with her brother.

As David was escorted out the back entrance of the courthouse, clutching his plastic folder of eviction notices and court mandates, a light rain began to fall over the gray city streets. He had chased a phantom son, a false empire, and a mountain of greed—only to lose the true queen who had held his world in her hands.
