Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm in Geneva

Seven thousand miles away, the morning sun rose over the snow-dusted peaks of the Swiss Alps, casting a golden glow across the calm, mirror-like surface of Lake Geneva.
At the private terrace of the historic Moreau estate in Cologny, Catherine sat at a wrought-iron table covered in fresh croissants, berries, and steaming espresso. She wore a tailored ivory cashmere sweater and simple gold hoop earrings, her posture relaxed, her skin glowing with radiant health. For years, she had worn muted tones and conservative cuts to appease Evelyn’s constant complaints that she looked "too flashy for a modest wife."
Now, the mask was gone.
Leo and Maya were running across the manicured green lawn with two purebred German Shepherds, their laughter ringing through the crisp alpine air. Standing a few paces behind Catherine was Henri Moreau—her grandfather’s legendary right-hand man and the chairman of the European Maritime Consortium.
"The board convened at dawn, Mademoiselle Catherine," Henri said, placing a leather-bound briefing folder next to her cup. "The market has responded exactly as anticipated. The moment news broke that you have formally assumed your position as Executive Vice President of Moreau Global, our stock gained four percent in pre-market trading."
Catherine took a sip of her coffee, her eyes scanning the financial indices. "And the Coleman Logistics contract?"
"Terminated at midnight under the moral conduct and executive breach clause," Henri replied smoothly. "David’s freight forwarding company relied on our shipping lanes for eighty-two percent of its operating volume. Without our container allocations, his cargo is currently stranded at the docks in Rotterdam and Long Beach. The demurrage penalties will begin accumulating at fifty thousand dollars per day starting Monday."
Catherine closed the folder with a quiet, decisive snap. She felt no rush of vengeful euphoria—only the deep, satisfying clarity of balance restored.
For seven years, David had treated his modest logistics firm as a personal empire, convinced that his own brilliance had secured the lucrative international shipping routes. He had sneered at Catherine’s quiet suggestions, laughed at her financial advice, and told her that "women have no head for real business." He had never suspected that the contracts keeping his company afloat had been signed by her hand before their wedding day.
"He will try to reach me," Catherine said, watching her children play.
"He has already called our corporate headquarters forty-seven times," Henri said. "His sister Megan attempted to post a video online claiming you abandoned the family and stole marital property. Our digital legal team had the content removed for defamation within six minutes and served her with an emergency cease-and-desist carrying a two-million-dollar penalty clause."

Catherine looked down at the delicate silver band on her right hand—the only piece of jewelry she had kept, a gift from her late mother.
"Let him exhaust himself, Henri," Catherine said, her voice cool and steady. "When a man builds his entire life on stolen foundation, he doesn't need an enemy to destroy him. Gravity will do the work."
