Chapter 4 - The Counter-Attack

Two weeks later, the preliminary hearing arrived. The courthouse was packed with members of the Bradley family, all wearing stern, accusatory expressions aimed directly at Amy and me as we walked down the hallway with Marcus Vance.
Teresa had managed to post bail using a high-interest bond backed by her sister Betsy’s house. She walked into the courtroom wearing a black dress, weeping softly into a handkerchief, playing the role of a heartbroken, frail mother betrayed by her ruthless son. Beside her sat Mason and his high-priced defense lawyer, Arthur Sterling.
When the judge convened the court, Sterling immediately took the floor, attempting to sway the room.
"Your Honor," Sterling began, his voice dripping with dramatic sympathy. "This entire tragic affair is a simple domestic misunderstanding blown out of proportion by an overly aggressive prosecutor. My client, Mrs. Teresa Bradley, is a devoted grandmother who merely stepped in to assist her son's household during a time when his wife, Amy Bradley, was struggling with severe postpartum emotional instability and failing to maintain the home."
I felt Amy stiffen beside me, her knuckles turning white as she squeezed her handbag.
Sterling continued smoothly. "Mrs. Bradley used funds willingly provided by her son to maintain the residence, organize family events, and care for her grandson. The alleged 'fraud' was merely a poorly organized attempt to secure the family asset for future generations. We request that all criminal charges be dismissed and settled privately within the family."
The prosecutor stood up to object, but Vance tapped his shoulder, stepping forward himself with a thick binder.
"Your Honor, if I may," Vance said, his voice echoing authoritatively across the quiet courtroom. "The defense’s narrative is not only completely false, but it is also a deliberate attempt to defame my client's wife. We have submitted bank records showing that over $140,000 was transferred directly into Mrs. Teresa Bradley's private account and spent at luxury casinos, boutiques, and auto dealerships."
Vance pulled out a USB drive and held it up.
"Furthermore, we have retrieved security camera footage from the home," Vance added.
My heart skipped a beat. Before leaving for my construction assignment months ago, I had installed a small, hidden smart-home camera above the living room bookcase to check in on the house, though I had forgotten about it during the chaotic work travel. Over the weekend, Vance's team had recovered the cloud backups.
Sterling’s face paled. Teresa stopped her fake crying instantly, her eyes widening in sudden panic.
"We have video footage from the afternoon of the birthday party," Vance announced calmly. "It clearly shows Mrs. Teresa Bradley locking the back patio door, preventing Amy Bradley from entering the air-conditioned living room while holding a feverish baby. It captures Mrs. Bradley explicitly stating—and I quote—‘You stay in that kitchen until every plate is cleaned, or I will make sure Connor leaves you with nothing.’"
The judge’s face hardened as he looked over his glasses at Teresa. The courtroom erupted into hushed, shocked whispers among the spectators.
"Your Honor!" Sterling stammered, scrambling through his papers. "This footage was obtained without—"
"The footage was recorded inside my client's own legal home, Your Honor," Vance interrupted smoothly. "It clearly establishes false imprisonment, child endangerment, and systematic physical and mental abuse."
The judge slammed his gavel down, the sound ringing sharply through the room.
"Silence in the court!" the judge ordered. He glared down at Teresa and Mason with disgust. "The defense's motion to dismiss is denied. Given the severity of the evidence presented, I am revoking bail for defendant Mason Bradley on charges of financial forgery, and setting a trial date for grand larceny and child endangerment for Teresa Bradley. Court is adjourned."
As officers stepped forward to put handcuffs back on Mason, Teresa lost her composure entirely. She lunged across the wooden barrier toward us, her fingernails clawing at the air.
"You serpent!" she screamed at Amy, her voice screeching through the courtroom. "You ruined my family! You stole my son! I will make you pay for this!"
I immediately stepped in front of Amy, blocking Teresa from view as bailiffs tackled my mother to the floor, dragging her out through the side doors.
Amy looked up at me, her eyes shining—not with fear this time, but with a newfound strength.

"She can't hurt us anymore, Connor," Amy said softly.
"No, she can't," I replied. "And we're going to take back everything she stole."
