Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Unmasked

The defense called Teresa Bradley to the stand in a desperate bid for jury sympathy. Clad in a muted gray suit, she walked to the stand with a frail, faltering step, dabbing her dry eyes with a handkerchief.

"Mrs. Bradley," Sterling asked softly. "Did you ever intend to steal from your son?"

"Never!" Teresa sobbed dramatically into her tissue. "Connor is my pride and joy! I sacrificed my whole life for him after his father passed away! Everything I did was to keep our family together! I thought Amy was overwhelmed... I was only trying to run the household so my son wouldn't have to worry!"

"And what about the house deed found in your nephew's folder?"

"Mason told me it was a protective trust!" Teresa wailed. "I don't understand complicated legal paperwork! I trusted Mason! I’m just an old woman who loves her family too much!"

It was a calculated performance—shifting the entire blame onto Mason to save herself.

Sitting at the defense table next to his attorney, Mason’s face went pale, then flared red with indignation. He realized in that instant that his aunt was throwing him under the bus to avoid a prison sentence.

Before the prosecutor could even start cross-examination, Mason suddenly stood up from his chair, shoving his attorney aside.

"That's a lie!" Mason shouted, pointing a shaking finger at Teresa. "She planned the whole thing! Your Honor, she planned everything!"

The courtroom broke into total chaos. The judge slammed his gavel repeatedly. "Order! Order in the court!"

"She threatened to expose my bank fraud if I didn't help her!" Mason yelled over the noise, ignoring his lawyer who was frantically trying to pull him down. "She owed three hundred thousand dollars to illegal lenders! She told me we could sell Connor's house, put him in debt, and blame Amy's 'spending habits'! She promised me fifty thousand dollars from the equity!"

"Mason, shut your mouth!" Teresa screamed, dropping her fragile old lady act entirely, her face contorting into pure fury. "You pathetic little snitch! I made you!"

"I have the text messages!" Mason roared back at the judge. "I saved every single text message and voice note she ever sent me! She told me to make sure Amy was so broken by the end of the birthday party that she would sign whatever paper we put in front of her!"

The judge’s face was dark as thunder. "Bailiffs, secure the defendants! Court will take an immediate one-hour recess!"

During the recess, Mason’s attorney formally submitted a full confession along with three years of archived text messages and recorded phone calls between Mason and Teresa.

The evidence was overwhelming. In one text message sent two days before the birthday party, Teresa had written:

“Once we force Amy to sign the waiver, Connor will have no choice. We’ll put her in a mental health facility and take full custody of the kid. Connor will work and pay for everything, just like he’s supposed to.”

When court reconvened, Sterling looked like a defeated man. He approached the bench and announced that Teresa Bradley wished to change her plea to guilty on all counts.

The nightmare was finally coming to an end.
