Chapter 8 - The Verdict and The Cleanup

Two weeks later, the courtroom was packed for the final sentencing hearing. The atmosphere was solemn, devoid of the earlier drama. The truth had been laid bare, and justice was about to be served.

Judge Robert Harris looked down from his bench at Teresa and Mason, who were both standing in orange prison jumpsuits, handcuffed at the wrists.

"In my twenty-five years on the bench," Judge Harris said, his voice echoing with profound authority, "I have rarely seen such a calculated, heartless betrayal within a family. Teresa Bradley, you weaponized your status as a mother to manipulate, exploit, and financially ruin your own son. You subjected your daughter-in-law to psychological torment and put an innocent infant's health at serious risk—all to fund your own lavish lifestyle and cover your illegal debts."

He turned his gaze to Mason.

"Mason Bradley, you used your position of trust at a financial institution to forge legal documents and enable this criminal scheme out of pure greed."

The judge began delivering the sentences.

"Mason Bradley, for the counts of grand forgery, financial fraud, and conspiracy, you are sentenced to eight years in state penitentiary, with eligibility for parole after four years."

Mason slumped, weeping silently as guards took hold of his arms.

"Teresa Bradley," Judge Harris continued, his tone icy. "For grand larceny, identity theft, child endangerment, and conspiracy to commit real estate fraud, you are sentenced to fifteen years in state prison, without the possibility of parole for the first ten years. Furthermore, the court orders full financial restitution of $142,000 to be seized from your remaining assets and estate."

Teresa gasped, her knees giving out. Guards caught her before she hit the floor, lifting her up as she began to wail uncontrollably.

As she was being led away toward the holding cell door, she turned her head toward me one last time. "Connor! Please! You're my son! Don't let them take me away!"

I looked at her, feeling neither hatred nor vengeance—only a deep, profound sense of pity for a woman who had traded her family's love for greed and control.

"Goodbye, Teresa," I said quietly.

She was led through the heavy steel doors, and the lock clicked shut with a finality that echoed through the room.

Outside the courthouse, Aunt Betsy and the rest of the family tried to approach us, their faces full of remorse and desperation.

"Connor..." Betsy pleaded, her eyes wide with fear. "We... we didn't know the full story. Please, don't cut us off. We're still your family..."

I stopped and looked at Betsy and the relatives who had stood by while my wife was mistreated.

"You sat at my table, ate my food, and watched my wife suffer without saying a word," I told them coldly. "You are not my family. If any of you ever attempt to contact Amy, Frederick, or me again, my attorney will immediately file harassment charges and civil lawsuits against every single one of you. Stay away from us."

Without waiting for a response, I took Amy’s hand, and together we walked down the courthouse steps into the bright afternoon sunlight.
