Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Secrets

With Teresa in jail awaiting trial and Mason held without bail, the rest of the Bradley family began to panic. The wall of silence they had built around my mother began to crumble.

Two days after the hearing, I received a surprise visitor at my office: Uncle Jim, Betsy’s husband. He looked exhausted, his head hung low as he walked into my room and sat across from my desk.

"Connor," Jim began, his voice raspy. "I... I didn't know the extent of what was happening. Betsy told me Teresa was just managing your household because Amy was sick. We had no idea about the money or the deed."

I looked at him coldly. "You sat in my backyard, Jim. You ate the seafood bought with my stolen money while my wife was forced to scrub pots in the kitchen with a sick infant. You didn't ask questions because it was convenient for you."

Jim swallowed hard, sweating under his collar. "I know. And I was wrong. I'm so sorry, Connor. But... you need to know why Teresa was so desperate for that money. She wasn't just spending it on luxury goods."

I frowned. "What do you mean?"

Jim leaned forward, leaning his elbows on the desk. "Teresa has been in deep debt to a group of predatory private lenders in Atlanta for over three years. She lost her own house to foreclosure before you moved back to Nashville, but she hid it from you. She told everyone she 'sold' it to downsize. She was using your three thousand dollars a month just to pay off the interest on her loans. When that wasn't enough, Mason helped her forge the deed to your house so she could take out a second mortgage of three hundred thousand dollars to pay off the cartel lenders completely."

The full scale of the plot finally crystallized. Teresa hadn't just been greedy; she was drowning, and she was fully prepared to drown my family alongside her to save herself.

"Who are these lenders, Jim?" I asked, my mind racing.

"Dangerous people," Jim said softly. "And now that Teresa is in jail and can't make the payments, they're looking for where the money went. They know about your house, Connor. They know where you work."

A cold chill ran down my spine. The threat wasn't just coming from inside the courtroom anymore; it was at our doorstep.

I immediately called Marcus Vance and briefed him on the situation. Vance contacted federal authorities and local law enforcement to flag the illegal lending operation, while I hired private security to protect the rental property where Amy and Frederick were staying.

That night, I sat down with Amy and told her everything Jim had revealed.

"They tried to sell our home to pay off her gambling debts?" Amy gasped, holding her hand over her mouth. "Connor, what if these people come after us?"

"They won't," I said, taking her hands into mine. "I've already upgraded our security, and the police are watching the property. But this proves one thing, Amy: we cannot hesitate. We have to finish this legal fight swiftly and crush their ability to ever come near us again."

Amy looked into my eyes, her expression transforming from fear to an intense, unwavering determination.

"I want to testify," she said suddenly.

I blinked, surprised. "Amy, you don't have to put yourself through that in front of the court—"

May you like

"No, Connor," she interrupted, her voice firm and unwavering. "For months, I let her make me feel like I was nothing. I let her make me feel like I didn't deserve to be your wife or Frederick's mother. I'm done hiding. I want to stand in that courtroom and look her in the eye while I tell the truth."

I looked at my wife, seeing the fierce, unbreakable woman I had fallen in love with years ago. She was no longer the broken girl on the plastic stool. She was fighting back.
