Four days later, the formal findings of the Article 32 hearing were delivered directly to the office of the Commanding General, XVIII Airborne Corps.
The document, running over one hundred and forty pages, was accompanied by General Orders Number Nine, signed by the three-star corps commander and concurred by the Secretary of the Army.
At zero-nine hundred hours, the officers and senior non-commissioned officers of the 525th Sustainment Brigade were ordered to assemble in the brigade auditorium. Over four hundred soldiers sat in rigid silence as the staff judge advocate stepped to the podium.
The findings were read into the record:
For violations of Article 92 (Dereliction of Duty), Article 132 (Fraud Against the United States), and Article 133 (Conduct Unbecoming an Officer), Lieutenant Colonel Vanessa Cole is hereby formally relieved of command for cause.
Further, by direction of the Department of the Army Active Duty Grade Determination Review Board, Lieutenant Colonel Cole will be reduced in rank to Major and immediately processed for involuntary separation from the military service under Other Than Honorable conditions.
A quiet, collective exhalation rippled through the auditorium. In the military, an Other Than Honorable discharge stripped an officer of their pension, their benefits, and the right to carry their title into civilian life. It was the most total and devastating repudiation the institution could deliver.
