Chapter 13 - Stripped of Command

The final administrative act took place in the garrison commander’s office. There were no cameras, no public speeches, and no honors rendered.
Vanessa stood before Colonel Vance and Major General Carter, dressed in the civilian business suit she had purchased the previous day. Her uniform had already been turned in to the quartermaster; her medals were packed away in a cardboard storage box currently sitting in the trunk of her car.
On Vance’s desk rested her military identification card.
With a pair of heavy shears, Vance picked up the plastic card, positioned the blades across the gold microchip, and cut it cleanly in two. The sharp snap of plastic breaking sounded final in the quiet room.
"Your vehicle pass has been revoked," Vance said formally. "You have until eighteen hundred hours this evening to vacate government quarters. A provost marshal escort will accompany you to the gate."
Vanessa did not speak. She looked older, her face lined with the exhaustion of five sleepless nights. She turned her gaze to Sophia.
"General Carter," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Sophia met her eyes. "Yes, Ms. Cole?"
The shift in title—from Colonel to Ms.—struck Vanessa like a physical blow. Her chin quivered, but she managed to steady herself.
"I hated you when you unzipped that jacket," Vanessa whispered. "I thought you were a hypocrite playing a theatrical game to make an example of me."
"I didn't make an example of you, Vanessa," Sophia replied softly. "You made an example of yourself. I simply refused to look away."
Vanessa stared at the desk for a long moment, then reached out, picked up her car keys, and turned toward the door. As she reached the threshold, she paused, her hand resting against the doorframe.
"Tell Linda Mercer... that I'm sorry."

Sophia looked at the broken woman in the doorway. "Tell her yourself when you pay the restitution ordered by the military court."
Vanessa nodded once, bowed her head, and walked out into the corridor, her civilian shoes clicking quietly against the tile until the sound faded completely into the distance.
