Chapter 9 - Broken Alliances

By noon, the support network Vanessa had spent years cultivating began to dissolve like sugar in hot water.

In the hallway outside the legal offices, Major Nathan Drake stood leaning against the wall, his uniform damp with sweat. When Vanessa walked out during a thirty-minute recess, she immediately approached him, her eyes wild with desperation.

"Nathan," she hissed, grabbing his sleeve. "The maintenance memos. Did you log the transfer approvals under my name or brigade staff consensus?"

Drake pulled his arm away. His voice was cold, completely devoid of the deference he had shown her for eighteen months.

"I logged them under your direct written order, Colonel."

Vanessa stared at him. "You were my executive officer! You advised me on those purchases! You sat in that room and agreed that the brigade headquarters needed an executive presence!"

"I followed your orders because you made it clear that anyone who pushed back would receive an adverse Officer Evaluation Report," Drake said, his voice rising enough that two military police officers standing guard turned their heads. "Captain Miller warned you about the dining facility floors. He told you someone was going to get seriously hurt. You threatened to ruin his career if he didn't sign the transfer."

"Nathan, you need to stand with me on this," Vanessa pleaded, her voice dropping into a desperate whisper. "If I go down, the entire command group looks complicit. We can testify that the funds were an administrative misclassification—"

"I already gave my sworn statement to the Inspector General at zero-nine hundred, Colonel," Drake said quietly.

Vanessa froze. "What?"

"I gave them the emails. The ones where you ordered me to delete the facility maintenance requests from the monthly log so the corps inspection team wouldn't see them." Drake looked at her, his expression a mixture of pity and contempt. "I should have stood up to you six months ago. I didn't, and that's on me. But I'm not lying under oath to protect someone who thinks she can pour hot coffee on people because she wears an oak leaf or an eagle."

Drake turned on his heel and walked down the corridor, his footsteps echoing against the linoleum.

Vanessa stood alone in the hallway. Across the hall, two young corporals carrying administrative folders walked past. They did not salute. They did not look at her. They simply walked past, their eyes fixed straight ahead, treating her as if she were already invisible.
