Chapter 26 - The Shadow Over the Depot

Two months after Lieutenant General Sophia Carter assumed command of the XVIII Airborne Corps, the transformation across Fort Liberty had ceased to be an experiment in reform; it had become the standard. The newly minted three-star general had instituted a zero-tolerance policy for leadership abuse, backed by mandatory quarterly civilian-military oversight roundtables held inside Mercer Hall.
Yet, as winter tightened its grip over North Carolina, an unexpected report landed on Sophia’s desk that proved the remnants of the old machine were far from eradicated.
Major Alan Miller, now serving as the corps' chief logistical inspector, entered her private office at 0630, clutching an unclassified bill of lading flagged in bright yellow ink.
"General, we have an anomaly at the Defense Logistics Agency regional hub in Richmond," Miller said, placing the document before her. "It involves the redistribution of the assets seized from the Cole family warehouse in Wilmington."
Sophia looked up from her morning coffee, her sharp gray eyes instantly focused. "Those generators and communications kits were earmarked for immediate transfer to the 82nd Airborne’s field readiness depots. Are you telling me they haven't moved?"
"They moved, Ma'am," Miller replied grimly. "Just not to our depots. Three tractor-trailers carrying over eight hundred thousand dollars in specialized field communications hardware cleared the outbound gate at Richmond four days ago under an emergency transfer order. But the destination facility listed on the digital manifest—an auxiliary depot outside Camp Mackall—is an inactive training compound with no personnel assigned."
Sophia leaned back in her chair, her brow furrowing. "Who signed the off-cycle requisition code?"
"The digital signature belongs to an account previously assigned to Lieutenant Colonel Vanessa Cole’s old command cell," Miller answered. "It was supposed to have been purged after her court-martial. Someone on the inside with elevated network credentials reactivated the profile for precisely forty-seven minutes at two in the morning last Thursday."
Sophia stood up and walked over to the large wall map detailing the military reservations across North Carolina. The pine barrens surrounding Camp Mackall were vast, isolated, and crisscrossed with unpaved logging trails.
"They're liquidating the residual cache before the federal forfeiture court finalizes the inventory," Sophia deduced, her voice dropping into that chilling, measured cadence that signaled complete operational focus. "Vanessa Cole may be behind bars in Aliceville, but her commercial network still has buyers who already paid deposits for that gear. They have to move it off government jurisdiction before CID's final audit."
She turned back to Miller. "Where is Major Drake?"

"Downstairs at the corps emergency operations desk, Ma'am."
"Brief him. Contact the Special Agent-in-Charge at Fort Liberty CID and notify the North Carolina Highway Patrol tactical interdiction unit. We do not wait for another container to vanish into the wind. We are going to Camp Mackall."
