Chapter 11 - The Betrayal Inside Whitmore Tower

Adrian returned to New York like a man going to war.

Whitmore Tower rose sixty-eight stories above Midtown.

For years, Adrian had considered it the safest place he knew.

That morning, he saw it differently.

Every elevator required biometric access.

Every executive floor had cameras.

Every transaction above five million dollars required dual authorization.

Yet someone had stolen hundreds of millions using his credentials.

That meant the enemy wasn't outside.

It was sitting at a desk.

Adrian ordered a silent internal audit.

No announcements.

No suspensions.

He wanted whoever was responsible to keep moving.

Clara and Lily remained under protection.

Walter hated security.

"They follow me to the bathroom."

"Because you escaped twice," Adrian reminded him.

"I got lost."

"You crossed six miles."

"Good legs."

Lily laughed.

Walter grinned.

Their bond had returned, though changed.

Lily still remembered his confession.

Sometimes she grew quiet around him.

Walter never demanded forgiveness.

That mattered.

One afternoon, he told her, "When you do something cowardly, saying sorry doesn't erase it."

Lily looked up from her book.

"What does?"

"Nothing."

"Then why say sorry?"

"So the other person doesn't have to carry your lie too."

She thought about that for a long time.

Inside Whitmore Tower, Adrian found his traitor.

Or thought he did.

Chief Financial Officer Leonard Shaw had approved twelve suspicious transfers.

Adrian summoned him privately.

Leonard denied everything.

Then Adrian placed printouts across the table.

Leonard began sweating.

"I was ordered."

"By whom?"

"I can't say."

"Then you're fired."

"They'll kill my daughter."

Adrian stopped.

Leonard showed him photographs mailed anonymously to his home.

His teenage daughter leaving school.

His wife at a grocery store.

His mother entering church.

Someone had threatened his family.

"Marilyn?"

"I never saw who."

"Who gave instructions?"

"Encrypted messages."

Adrian's security team traced them.

Not to Marilyn.

To someone with access from within the Whitmore family office.

Only four people had that access.

Adrian.

Walter.

The family attorney.

And June.

June was dead.

Walter did not use computers.

That left the attorney.

Elliot Crane had represented the Whitmores for twenty-two years.

Adrian trusted him like family.

Which was exactly why he hadn't suspected him.

Elliot disappeared before security reached his office.

His files were wiped.

A private plane registered to one of his shell companies left Teterboro thirty minutes earlier.

Destination unknown.

Adrian stood in Elliot's empty office, furious at himself.

Clara called.

"You sound terrible."

"My lawyer helped steal from me."

"Your day wins."

He laughed dryly.

"What happened to yours?"

"Lily put dish soap in the dishwasher."

Adrian paused.

"What happens?"

"Apparently, bubbles happen."

He laughed for real.

It surprised him.

There had been almost no laughter in his life since June died.

Clara had become an unexpected anchor.

She did not flatter him.

She didn't care about his title.

When he became arrogant, she told him.

When he forgot to eat, she noticed.

When Lily interrupted meetings to ask why billionaires needed three phones, Clara looked embarrassed while Adrian answered seriously.

Something was changing.

Neither named it.

The FBI found Marilyn before they found Elliot.

She was arrested at a private airfield in New Jersey.

Her suitcase contained forty thousand dollars in cash and two passports.

Adrian watched her interrogation through glass.

Marilyn denied everything.

Then agents showed her June's files.

She stopped smiling.

"My father built that company."

"No," Adrian said when allowed into the room.

"My father and Mateo Russo did."

"Your father was weak."

"My father was human."

"He let cleaning people and mechanics manipulate him."

Adrian leaned forward.

"Daniel Harper saved my life."

Marilyn's mouth twisted.

"And his daughter has you wrapped around her finger."

Something inside Adrian cooled.

"You still don't understand."

"What?"

"The person you kept dismissing is the reason you're sitting here."

Marilyn's face changed.

Adrian walked out.

That should have felt like victory.

It didn't.

Because Elliot Crane remained free.

And that evening, Walter vanished for the third time.

Not by accident.

Security footage showed him leaving the protected residence voluntarily.

He walked to the curb.

Entered a black sedan.

Before getting inside, Walter looked directly at the camera.

Then he held up a folded piece of paper.

May you like

On it were three handwritten words.

I REMEMBER EVERYTHING.
