Chapter 12 - Walter's Last Gamble

Adrian nearly tore the security room apart.
"Why did nobody stop him?"
The guard swallowed.
"Mr. Whitmore said you authorized the car."
"Did you call me?"
"No, sir."
"Then start praying my father comes back."
Clara watched the footage again.
Walter walking steadily.
No confusion.
No hesitation.
"He planned it."
Adrian turned.
"My father has dementia."
"That doesn't mean every thought he has is confused."
Lily leaned closer to the monitor.
"Go back."
The technician rewound.
"There."
Walter touched the bluebird pin Lily had given him.
Three times.
Lily's eyes widened.
"He used to do that when he wanted me to remember something."
"What?"
"Bluebird mailbox."
Adrian pulled property records.
Walter's cottage?
Empty.
Then Lily shook her head.
"Not his mailbox."
"June's."
Everyone stopped.
June had collected bluebird decorations.
One property stood out.
A small lakeside cabin in Connecticut where Adrian's parents spent their anniversaries.
Security raced there.
They found Walter.
And Elliot Crane.
Both alive.
Elliot sat tied to a kitchen chair.
Walter sat calmly across from him drinking coffee.
Adrian stormed inside.
"Dad!"
Walter looked annoyed.
"Don't shout."
"Have you lost your mind?"
"Parts."
Elliot shouted, "Your father kidnapped me!"
Walter shrugged.
"He came willingly."
"Then he pulled a gun!"
Adrian stared.
Walter placed an antique revolver on the table.
"Wasn't loaded."
Adrian covered his face with both hands.
"Dad."
Walter looked toward Lily.
"Worked."
Lily beamed despite Clara's disapproval.
Walter had remembered Elliot's role.
Years earlier, Elliot had drafted documents with Richard Pierce.
Not criminal at first.
Then increasingly compromised.
Walter arranged the meeting by pretending he still possessed an original document Elliot desperately wanted.
Elliot came.
Walter recorded their entire conversation.
Federal agents arrived.
The recording was devastating.
Elliot admitted helping Richard conceal Elena's ownership.
He admitted laundering money with Marilyn.
Then came the question about Daniel.
On the recording, Walter asked:
"Did Richard have Daniel Harper killed?"
Elliot's answer:
"He ordered the false mayday. He didn't think Harper would die. He thought it would scare him."
Clara began shaking when she heard it.
"Scare him?"
Daniel entered a burning warehouse because he believed firefighters were trapped.
The roof collapsed.
Richard Pierce had manufactured the emergency.
He may not have intended Daniel's death.
But his lie killed him.
Elliot was arrested.
The criminal conspiracy unraveled quickly.
Accounts frozen.
Documents seized.
Executives questioned.
News outlets descended.
Then the story leaked.
BILLIONAIRE DYNASTY BUILT ON STOLEN SHARES.
FIREFIGHTER HERO'S FAMILY LIVED IN POVERTY.
CEO'S FATHER HID SECRET SON.
Clara's photograph appeared online.
So did Lily's.
That changed everything.
Reporters camped outside her school.
Strangers offered money for interviews.
People online called Clara a gold digger.
Others called her a saint.
Lily became "The Little Girl Who Saved A Billionaire."
She hated it.
"I didn't save him."
Clara hugged her.
"You helped him."
"They make it sound fake."
Adrian hired privacy lawyers.
He personally asked news networks to keep Lily's face off television.
Some complied.
Some didn't.
Then a photograph went viral.
Lily sitting beside Walter at the hospital reading The Secret Garden.
The image captured something people understood without explanation.
An old man leaning toward a child.
A little girl reading to someone who looked peaceful only beside her.
Millions shared it.
Donations began arriving for Clara.
She refused them.
Adrian offered a house.
She refused that too.
"Why?" he asked.
"Because I don't want Lily growing up believing kindness is a lottery ticket."
He looked at her for a long time.
"You really are impossible."
"So I've been told."
But Adrian did one thing she accepted.
He created, with Clara's permission, the Daniel Harper Memorial Fund.
Not for Lily.
For children of firefighters and low-wage workers who needed school books, meals, or tuition.
The first grant?
Three dollars.
To clear Lily's library fine.
She laughed when she saw it.
Then Walter's doctor called Adrian.
The latest scans were worse.
His dementia was progressing faster than expected.
Walter might have months of clarity.
Maybe less.
Adrian sat alone after hearing it.
For the first time in years, money could do absolutely nothing.
Then Lily came into the room carrying the green book.
"Walter wants us."
"Us?"
"Everybody."
They found him on the porch.
Elena sat beside him.
Samuel stood nearby.
Clara remained behind Lily.
Walter looked at the family he had broken, lost, hidden, and somehow found again.
"I need to fix one last thing."
Adrian sighed.
"Dad, every time you say that, federal agents appear."
Walter smiled.
"This one's worse."
He handed Adrian a sealed envelope.
May you like
It contained a revised ownership agreement.
Walter intended to give away almost everything he owned.
