Chapter 9 - The House at the End of Cedar Road

The address led to a white farmhouse outside Asheville.

No gates.

No security.

No luxury cars.

Only a weathered mailbox and an old oak tree.

Adrian expected answers.

Instead, they found the front door open.

A lamp shattered.

Drawer contents scattered across the floor.

Clara grabbed Lily before she could enter.

"Stay outside."

Adrian's security team swept the house.

No one was there.

But someone had searched it.

Recently.

On the kitchen table sat a coffee mug still warm.

Walter looked around, trembling.

"Elena."

A photograph on the refrigerator showed a silver-haired woman standing beside a man in his forties.

The man had Walter's eyes.

Adrian stared at him.

"My brother."

Walter touched the picture.

"Samuel."

A car approached.

Security drew weapons.

An old pickup stopped near the porch.

A woman climbed out.

She was around seventy.

Silver hair.

Work boots.

Her face changed when she saw Walter.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Elena Russo whispered, "You found me."

Walter began crying.

Adrian had never seen his father look so small.

Elena did not hug him.

"You weren't supposed to."

"June is gone."

Elena closed her eyes.

"I know."

"Richard too."

"I know."

"Then why hide?"

Elena looked at Adrian.

"Because Richard wasn't the only Pierce."

They all understood.

Marilyn.

Elena explained that someone had contacted Samuel two days earlier claiming Walter was dying and asking him to meet privately.

Samuel became suspicious.

He left.

"Where?"

"I don't know."

Adrian's frustration exploded.

"Everyone in this family disappears and nobody knows where anybody goes."

Elena almost smiled.

"You sound like Walter."

"I sincerely hope not."

She invited them inside after security cleared the property.

For the next two hours, buried history surfaced.

Samuel had grown up believing his father died before he was born.

Elena never told him about Walter.

June supported them secretly.

Daniel visited twice over the years.

"He checked on us," Elena said.

Clara's eyes filled.

"He never told me."

"He was protecting you."

Elena reached for her hand.

"He spoke about you constantly."

Lily leaned forward.

"And me?"

Elena smiled.

"Especially you."

She went to a drawer and pulled out a photograph.

Daniel holding newborn Lily.

Clara had never seen it.

On the back Daniel had written:

THE BEST THING I EVER HELPED MAKE.

Lily pressed it against her chest.

Then Adrian asked the question that mattered.

"Why did Marilyn come here?"

Elena frowned.

"She was here?"

"Someone searched the house."

Elena's face went pale.

She hurried to a bedroom.

A floorboard had been pried open.

The compartment beneath was empty.

"No."

"What was there?"

"June's ledger."

Adrian's blood ran cold.

"What ledger?"

"Everything."

Payments.

Forged transfers.

Names.

Richard's theft.

The manipulated shares.

Evidence that could transfer a massive portion of Whitmore Technologies ownership to Samuel.

"How much?" Clara asked.

Adrian calculated mentally.

If Mateo Russo's original stake had been preserved through subsequent restructurings, it could represent nearly twenty percent of the company.

Billions.

Elena laughed bitterly.

"Now you understand why people died."

Lily didn't like the word.

Died.

She wandered toward the porch while adults argued.

Near the steps, she noticed tire marks.

One set.

A small rental sedan.

Beside them lay something shiny.

An earring.

Pearl.

Lily had seen Marilyn wear matching pearls every day.

She picked it up using a napkin.

Adrian's security chief examined it.

"Good catch."

Lily shrugged.

"Adults don't look down enough."

The police were called.

An alert went out for Marilyn.

But she had vanished.

Then Samuel finally called.

Elena answered.

Her face changed.

"Sam?"

Everyone gathered.

A man's voice came through the speaker.

"Mom, don't say anything. I'm okay."

"Where are you?"

"Safe."

Adrian moved closer.

"Samuel, this is Adrian Whitmore."

Silence.

Then:

"I know who you are."

"We need to meet."

"No."

"Marilyn Pierce is looking for you."

"I know."

"She has June's ledger."

Another silence.

Then Samuel said something nobody expected.

"No, she doesn't."

Adrian frowned.

"What?"

"She has the fake."

Elena covered her mouth.

Samuel continued.

"Daniel taught my mother never to keep the real evidence where someone expects it."

Clara's heartbeat quickened.

"Where is it?"

Samuel answered:

"With Daniel's daughter."

Everyone turned toward Lily.

She stared back.

May you like

"What?"

Samuel said, "Ask her about the green book."
