Chapter 8 - Walter's Confession

Clara slapped Walter.
The sound cracked through the room.
Nobody moved.
Not Adrian.
Not the security guards.
Not the nurse.
Walter's face turned with the blow.
Clara stared at her own hand as though it belonged to someone else.
Then six years of grief erupted.
"You knew?"
Walter didn't defend himself.
"You knew my husband was in danger?"
"I suspected."
"You knew!"
"Clara—"
"He had a child!"
Walter nodded, tears running freely.
"I know."
"You let me bury him without telling me!"
"I was afraid."
Clara laughed once.
It sounded broken.
"You?"
Walter flinched.
"The billionaire was afraid?"
Adrian stepped forward.
"Clara—"
She turned on him.
"Don't."
He stopped.
Walter lowered himself into a chair.
"Richard had documents."
"What documents?"
"Proof of Samuel."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Why did that matter?"
Walter looked at his son.
"Because Samuel wasn't only my child."
The room went quiet.
"He owned part of the company."
Adrian stared.
Walter explained.
Whitmore Industries had not been founded by Walter alone.
In the earliest years, he had a partner.
Elena's father, Mateo Russo.
Mateo invested nearly half the startup capital.
When Mateo died suddenly, his shares were supposed to transfer to Elena.
Instead, Richard Pierce manipulated the corporate restructuring.
Walter signed documents he barely understood.
Elena's ownership disappeared.
"I let it happen," Walter whispered.
"You stole from her?" Adrian asked.
"I told myself it was temporary."
His shame filled the room.
"Then Elena and I…"
He couldn't finish.
Adrian understood.
Samuel was conceived during Walter's affair with Elena.
June discovered it.
She nearly left him.
Instead, June insisted Walter restore Elena's financial rights.
The trust was created as partial compensation.
But Richard intercepted distributions.
He controlled information.
Threatened Elena.
Then the mill fire happened.
"Richard thought Daniel had evidence," Walter said.
"He did," Tom answered.
Walter nodded.
"Daniel threatened to go to federal investigators."
Clara's eyes hardened.
"And years later Richard killed him."
"I couldn't prove it."
"You didn't try."
Walter's face crumpled.
"Not hard enough."
Lily had said nothing.
She walked out.
Clara followed.
They found her behind the guesthouse near a small stone wall.
Lily sat with her knees pulled against her chest.
"I don't want Walter to die."
Clara sat beside her.
"I know."
"But I'm mad at him."
"You're allowed."
"Can I love somebody and be mad?"
Clara's throat tightened.
"Yes."
"At the same time?"
"Especially at the same time."
Lily leaned against her.
Inside, Adrian confronted his father.
"You built my entire life on secrets."
Walter nodded.
"You let me inherit a company partly stolen from another family."
"Yes."
"Where are Elena and Samuel?"
"I don't know."
Adrian slammed his palm against the table.
"Try!"
Walter looked up.
"I sent them away."
"Where?"
"Richard was threatening them."
Walter squeezed his eyes shut.
"June arranged new names."
Adrian stopped.
"My mother helped them disappear?"
"To keep them alive."
"Then how do we find them?"
Walter looked toward the old lockbox Clara had brought from her apartment.
"Daniel knew."
Clara returned carrying it.
"This?"
Walter nodded.
She had owned the box for six years.
Daniel had told her it contained insurance documents and personal papers.
Clara had never found the key.
Lily suddenly stood.
"Dad's coat."
Clara frowned.
"What?"
"The fire coat."
Daniel's old turnout coat hung in the back of Clara's closet.
Lily had once found a tiny brass key sewn behind the inner name patch.
Clara had assumed it belonged to a locker.
They retrieved it.
It fit.
Inside the lockbox lay photographs.
A cassette tape.
Old employee badges.
A sealed envelope addressed:
JUNE WHITMORE — IF I DON'T MAKE IT.
And beneath everything, a birth certificate.
Samuel David Russo.
Father line blank.
Mother: Elena Maria Russo.
Attached was a handwritten note from June.
Walter began reading.
Then dropped it.
Adrian picked it up.
June had written:
SAMUEL IS SAFE. DANIEL KNOWS WHERE. WHEN RICHARD IS GONE, THE TRUTH CAN COME HOME.
Below that was an address.
Not New York.
Not Pennsylvania.
A town in North Carolina.
Adrian immediately ordered a plane.
Clara refused to go.
"This is your family."
Adrian looked at Lily.
"No."
He held Daniel's lockbox.
"It's yours too."
The next morning, four people boarded Adrian Whitmore's jet.
Adrian.
Walter.
Clara.
Lily.
May you like
None of them knew that somebody else had already reached North Carolina first.
Marilyn Pierce.
