Chapter 3 - The Morning Ambush in the Grand Foyer

At 6:30 AM, the cold morning light washed over the limestone terraces and polished marble hallways of Croft Estate.
In the grand foyer, Vivian Mercer stood beside the brass elevator gates, dressed in a fresh, bespoke midnight-blue Italian wool skirt suit, holding a steaming porcelain cup of imported espresso.
Beside her stood forty-eight-year-old Harrison Mercerāher uncle and the chief managing trustee of Mercer Capitalāalongside two uniformed medical directors carrying a heavy, titanium-reinforced straitjacket and a federal psychiatric commitment petition.
"The girl entered at midnight, Harrison," Vivian whispered, her voice dripping with triumphant malice. "The acoustic sensors registered zero activity after three o'clock. She is either catatonic or bleeding out on the hardwood. When the doors open, we photograph the scene, have the coroner sign the emergency incapacitation decree, and execute the final proxy takeover at the nine o'clock board assembly."
Harrison Mercer smiled cruelly, adjusting his gold signet ring. "The Hayes pack will be liquidated by noon. Richard Hayes signed the confession of debt last night. Once Kane is in the federal psychiatric wing in Tacoma, the entire four-hundred-million-dollar timber reserve belongs to us."
PING.
The hydraulic elevator doors at the end of the corridor slid open with a smooth, oiled glide.
The four conspirators froze mid-breath.
Marching down the central marble gallery, flanked by Gideon Locke and four armed operators from Croft Tactical Interdiction wearing tailored black suits with tactical carbines at low-ready retention, was Kane Croft.
He was dressed in an immaculate bespoke three-piece charcoal Italian wool silk suit, his posture straight, commanding, and radiating absolute sovereign power. His eyes were not wild, nor burning with feral madness; they were deep, crystalline amber, sharp as diamond, and completely serene.
And walking proudly at his right side, dressed in an exquisite ivory tailored wool coat over a royal-emerald silk blouse, her dark hair pinned into an elegant chignon, her chin lifted in flawless, regal dignity, was Harper Hayes.
Vivian Mercerās porcelain espresso cup slipped from her paralyzed fingers:
SMASH.
Hot espresso and broken porcelain exploded across the polished marble floor, splashing over the hem of her expensive trousers.
"K-Kane...?! THE GIRL?!" Vivian stammered, backing frantically against the elevator grille, her face draining of every single drop of color until she looked like wet drywall. "What... what kind of demonic trick is this?! You were supposed to beā"
"I was supposed to be a rabid animal, Vivian?" Kaneās voice rang across the grand foyer like an artillery shell detonating in an enclosed cavern.
May you like
He stopped three feet from where Vivian stood shaking. He did not yell. He looked down at her with slate-amber eyes colder than an Arctic blizzard, his presence radiating an immovable, crushing authority that made the two medical directors instinctively drop the straitjacket and step back with hands raised in absolute surrender.
"You spent five years putting silver in my morning coffee, Vivian," Kane whispered into her face, every syllable carrying the sub-zero chill of an executioner's pit. "You told the world I was a monster. But the monster was standing in my kitchen wearing a cream suit."
