Chapter 8 - The Cleansing of the Mercer Estate

By 2:00 PM that afternoon, four commercial moving vans from Croft Sovereign Logistics were backed up to the circular cobblestone driveway of the thirty-acre Mercer ancestral estate on Mercer Island in Seattle.

Under the direct personal supervision of Chief Security Operator Gideon Locke and Special Agent Marcus Cole, the residence underwent an immediate, transformative cleansing.

Every single imported Italian sofa, every piece of designer furniture, every vanity portrait of Vivian and Harrison, and every luxury sports car in the six-car garage was systematically inventoried, packed into sealed disposal crates, and hauled away to be auctioned at the federal restitution clearinghouse in Seattle.

The private master laboratory where Vivian had mixed her chemical solutions was systematically demolished.

Master timber craftsmen arrived with eighty boxes of French white-oak flooring, tearing out the reinforced cabinets, knocking down the oppressive wainscoting, and installing radiant, floor-to-ceiling panoramic glass bay windows overlooking the serene waters of Lake Washington.

In place of the oppressive manor, a magnificent, sun-drenched private maternal health, veterinary rehabilitation, and legal advocacy sanctuary was constructed: THE HARPER HAYES FOUNDATION FOR PACK PRESERVATION & WHISTLEBLOWER RIGHTS.

The facility provided free pediatric healthcare, forensic accounting audits, emergency high-security safe housing, and full university scholarships for thousands of struggling families and working-class wolves across the Pacific Northwest.

On a glorious Saturday morning three weeks later, Kane, my younger sister Chloe, and I walked through the sunlit research conservatory carrying fresh porcelain mugs of black hazelnut coffee.

I wore casual white linen trousers and an open-collared navy silk blouse, my dark hair falling softly over my shoulders. My skin glowed with radiant health, my posture straight, majestic, and completely at peace.

Barnaby, an eight-month-old golden retriever puppy whom Kane had gifted to Chloe forty-eight hours after the boardroom raid, came galloping through the open French doors into the conservatory.

His golden tail thumped enthusiastically against the white-oak floorboards as he bounded straight toward Chloe, gently resting his chin across the sixteen-year-old girl's knee, panting happily with his brown eyes shining with pure devotion.

Chloe laughed—a deep, musical, completely unburdened laugh that echoed across the water like silver bells—as she gently scratched the puppy behind his ears.

"Look at the lake, Harper," Chloe beamed, tears of sweet, sacred gratitude shining in her eyes. "Dad’s debts are gone. The pack has electricity again. We're actually safe."

Kane walked beside me, wearing a comfortable linen blazer, setting his coffee mug on the cedar railing, stepping up beside me, wrapping his strong, protective arm gently around my waist, looking out across the sparkling blue waters.

"How does the morning look, Chairwoman Hayes-Croft?" Kane asked softly, his deep baritone rich with quiet, eternal devotion.

May you like

I took a slow, deep, completely free breath of the clean pine air, resting my head back against Kane’s heartbeat, feeling the profound, unbreakable peace that had settled forever into our souls.

"It looks peaceful, Kane," I smiled, turning to look into his warm, loving amber eyes. "It looks whole."
