Chapter 9 - The Trial's Final Gavel in Department 3B

Six months after that stormy midnight in the master bedroom, the federal criminal trial of The United States v. Harrison Mercer, Vivian Mercer, and Vincent Croft-Mercer reached its dramatic, historic conclusion in Courtroom 3B of the William Kenzo Nakamura United States Courthouse in downtown Seattle.

The defense had collapsed entirely under the weight of ninety gigabytes of decrypted Swiss banking manifests, the physical chemical vials of synthetic silver nitrate entered into evidence as Exhibit A, the authenticated 4K security footage of the estate confrontation, and Arthur Vance Senior’s devastating, flawless prosecution.

Harrison Mercer, Vivian Mercer, and Vincent Croft-Mercer sat at the defense table in drab, orange federal prison jumpsuits, their hands and ankles locked in heavy carbon-steel transport shackles.

Stripped of their bespoke designer wardrobes, their luxury sports cars, their stolen millions, and their manufactured high-society arrogance, they sat with their heads bowed in absolute, crushing defeat as hundreds of Cascade pack members and forestry workers packed the gallery benches.

Harrison’s hair had turned completely white at the roots, unwashed and thin, his face gaunt and hollow, realizing that not a single member of Washington's business or civic community would ever speak his name again.

Chief United States District Judge Eleanor Bradley took the elevated bench and slammed her heavy oak gavel down with a sharp, resonant CRACK.

"In the matter of Harrison Mercer," Judge Bradley announced, her authoritative voice commanding total, suffocating silence across the stone chamber. "On the charges of Premeditated Attempted Capital Murder by Chemical Poisoning, Grand Fiduciary Embezzlement in excess of eighty-four million dollars, Interstate Wire Fraud, and Operating an Unlawful Shadow Syndicate under the RICO Act, this court sentences you to Thirty-Five Years at the ADX Florence Supermax Facility in Colorado, without eligibility for early parole, probation, or compassionate release, and orders full financial restitution of eighty-four million, six hundred thousand dollars."

Harrison broke down into ragged, silent wails, burying his cuffed face in his trembling hands.

"Vivian Mercer," the judge continued, turning her blazing, withering gaze onto the cruel socialite. "For active conspiracy to commit capital murder, unlawful administration of toxic synthetic chemical compounds, and corporate extortion, you are sentenced to Twenty-Eight Years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Aliceville."

"Vincent Croft-Mercer," Judge Bradley concluded. "For corporate racketeering, securities fraud, and suborning criminal perjury, you are sentenced to Twenty-Four Years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Terre Haute."

BANG.

The sound of the heavy wooden gavel struck the bench like a closing iron tombstone sealing a crypt forever.

Two armed federal marshals hauled Harrison, Vivian, and Vincent to their feet, dragging them backward through the reinforced steel holding doors into the cold reality of their multi-decade prison sentences where their greed, vanity, and cruelty would rot in the dark forever.

Outside on the sunlit courthouse steps overlooking 5th Avenue, Arthur Vance Senior, Special Agent Marcus Cole, Chief Operator Gideon Locke, Chloe, Kane, and I stood before a sea of international forestry and news cameras.

I stood tall in an exquisite royal-emerald tailored wool coat, holding Kane’s hand firmly in mine, looking directly into the camera lenses with a calm, fearless, radiant smile.

Kane Croft stepped to the microphone bank, wrapping his strong, protective arm securely around my waist, and delivered a single, powerful message to the watching world:

"Cruelty and pride believe that an honest woman auditing books in the dark has no voice, and that poison can turn a sovereign king into a beast. They believe that power belongs to those who strike from the shadows with threats and stolen millions. But an honest woman’s courage, backed by sovereign justice, unyielding truth, and the protection of an unbroken family, is an unbreakable fortress that will always balance the ledger."
