Chapter 5 - The Reading of the True Lineal Charter

Arthur Vance Senior strode to the center of the foyer, his silver-headed walking cane striking the marble floor with concussive, rhythmic majesty:

CLACK. CLACK. CLACK.

The entire hall fell into dead, breathless silence.

Arthur adjusted his wire-rimmed spectacles, pulling a heavy, hundred-pound vellum indenture bound in blue silk ribbon from his leather brief.

On the digital monitors above the gallery, the foundational 1974 Sovereign Charter executed by Admiral Thomas Vance and Don Carmine Croft flared onto the screen in crystalline clarity:

THE CROFT-VANCE SOVEREIGN LINEAL CHARTER (SECTION 18-B):

The Lineal Capital Pool: Controlling eighty-five percent of the commercial deepwater container terminals, automated timber export hubs, and mineral leases across Washington and Oregon (Total Current Valuation: $420,000,000.00).

The Filial Disinheritance Clause: In the event that any secondary collateral relative, fiduciary, or corporate affiliate shall commit an act of chemical poisoning, unlawful psychiatric confinement, or financial extortion against the primary Alpha sovereign, One Hundred Percent of All Corporate Shares, Titles, and Estate Assets are permanently forfeited with extreme prejudice.

The Sovereign Lineal Ratification: Official confirmation of Harper Hayes as the Permanent Sovereign Co-Chairwoman and Supreme Fiduciary of the newly consolidated Croft-Hayes Sovereign Infrastructure Consortium, with Kane Croft confirmed as Supreme Executive Commander.

Vivian Mercer let out a sharp, strangulated shriek, her knees giving out beneath her as she collapsed onto the floorboards, clawing frantically at Arthur’s trousers:

"Arthur! Please! I spent five years running this estate! Harper is a nobody from an impoverished mountain pack! She was fixing accounting books in a trailer! You cannot hand four hundred million dollars to a girl who arrived in a worn sweater!"

Arthur Vance Senior slowly raised his silver-headed cane, resting the polished steel ferrule directly against Vivian’s diamond necklace:

CLACK.

"Harper was fixing accounting books because your uncle was robbing her people, Vivian," Arthur rumbled, his voice carrying fifty years of federal jurisprudence. "And you are a common poisoner facing thirty-five years at the ADX Florence Supermax Facility in Colorado."

Special Agent Marcus Cole stepped forward, pulling heavy carbon-steel transport handcuffs from his duty belt:

CLICK. CLACK.

The steel ratchets engaged around Harrison Mercer’s wrists behind his back with bone-jarring finality as two federal marshals hauled the weeping executive to his feet.

A second pair of handcuffs snapped around Vivian Mercer’s wrists as she wailed in shrill, ruined hysterics, her bespoke Italian skirt dragging through the spilled coffee on the floor.

As the marshals dragged the conspirators down the central driveway toward the waiting federal enforcement transports, forty armed Croft operators and estate staff bowed their heads in deep, unanimous reverence to Harper Hayes and Kane Croft.

Harper looked up at Kane, her hazel eyes shining with quiet, unshakeable peace.

Kane wrapped his large, warm arm securely around her waist, drawing her against his broad chest, his rough features softening into rare, authentic tenderness.

"Your father's debt is cleared, Harper," Kane murmured softly. "And the Cascade Pack is sovereign forever."
