Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Past

The live feed on my phone screen felt like a window into a nightmare unfolding in high definition.
My thumb hovered over the glass as Brandon walked across the polished hardwood floors of our living room. He had claimed he would be trapped in corporate strategy meetings until six in the evening. Yet here he was at two in the afternoon, loosening his tie with a methodical, cold deliberation that sent a chill straight down my spine.
What chilled me even more was Florence.
My mother-in-law had always carried herself with an easy, grandmotherly grace. She was the anchor of our home during these chaotic post-partum months. But the moment Brandon stepped into the frame, her shoulders locked up. She didn't look up to greet him with a warm smile. Instead, she pulled Hannah just half an inch closer to her chest, her knuckles turning pale against the soft pink blanket.
"Why are you here, Brandon?" Florence’s voice came faintly through the phone’s tiny speaker. She didn't sound angry; she sounded terrified.
Brandon didn't answer immediately. He walked over to the side table, poured himself a glass of water, and took a deliberate sip. "I forgot my file. And I came to check on my daughter."
"She’s sleeping," Florence said quickly—a blatant lie, because Hannah’s wide blue eyes were open, staring at Brandon with an eerie, unblinking stillness.
Brandon took two steps toward them. The moment his shadow fell across the sofa, Hannah didn't just fuss—she gasped. It was a sharp, wheezing intake of air, the sound a child makes right before they lose their breath from sheer terror. Her little hands slammed into fists, pressed tightly against her stomach.
"See?" Brandon’s voice turned harsh, dropping its usual friendly cadence. "She does it every time. What are you doing to her when Lauren isn't here, Mom? Why is she afraid of me?"
"I’m not doing anything!" Florence’s voice cracked. "You know very well why she’s reacting this way, Brandon! Don't you dare turn this on me!"
"Watch your tongue," Brandon snapped, leaning down so his face was inches from his mother's. "You signed the agreement. You live under my roof because I allow it. If Lauren starts asking questions, you tell her it's colic. You tell her it's developmental. If you say a single word about what happened in San Diego, I’ll make sure you never see this baby again. Do you understand me?"
I sat frozen in my glass-walled office at the agency, the breath completely knocked out of my lungs.
San Diego?
Brandon and I had met in San Diego six years ago. Florence lived in Phoenix back then, or so I had been told. What agreement? What had happened in California that I knew nothing about?
On the screen, Florence lowered her head, tears glistening on her cheeks. She didn't fight back. She simply nodded, hugging Hannah tighter. Brandon turned on his heel, grabbed a manila folder from the desk, and walked out, slamming the front door behind him.
My phone screen went still, showing only Florence rocking Hannah in silence, whispering words I couldn't hear.

My hands were shaking so violently I almost dropped the phone. The polished corporate office around me vanished. All I could feel was the terrifying realization that my life was built on a foundation of carefully constructed lies. My husband was hiding a dark secret, my mother-in-law was complicit out of fear, and my three-month-old baby was the only one honest enough to show the terror we were all living in.
I grabbed my purse, stood up from my desk, and walked out without saying a word to my boss. I wasn't going back to work today. I was going to find out what happened in San Diego.
