Chapter 9 - The Hidden File

I drove to a 24-hour diner on the edge of town, sitting in a quiet back booth where I could watch Hannah while she slept peacefully in her carrier beside me.
My mind was clear now, sharpened by a mother’s instinct to protect her child.
Brandon was powerful, smart, and wealthy. If I simply called the police now with old reports from California, his high-priced lawyers would twist it as an isolated past incident and accuse me of having a post-partum mental breakdown, just as he had threatened.
I needed undeniable, rock-solid evidence of what he was doing now.
I pulled out my laptop and connected to the diner’s Wi-Fi.
When I had installed the hidden cameras in our home, I hadn't just set up a live feed. I had paid for a 30-day cloud recording subscription that saved continuous footage to a secure server.
My fingers flew across the keyboard as I logged into the security account.
I scrolled back through two weeks of footage, cross-referencing the dates Florence had mentioned.
And there it was.
Timestamped at 2:14 AM, twelve days ago.
The video showed the dark nursery. Brandon entering the room, looking visibly agitated. He walked up to the crib where Hannah was crying. The infrared camera caught everything in terrifying detail—his face contorted in rage, his hands violently shaking the frame of the wooden crib, and then reaching in, grabbing Hannah’s tiny arms, and shouting directly into her face until Florence burst into the room and pushed him back.
I sat back in the diner booth, tears burning my eyes as I watched the footage. It was terrifying to watch, but it was exactly what I needed.
It was undisputed proof of child abuse and endangerment.
I immediately downloaded the file onto three separate flash drives and uploaded a copy to an encrypted cloud folder accessible only by me.
Next, I opened my email and composed a message to Dr. Lawson, attaching the video clip along with the police reports from San Diego.
Subject: URGENT - Hannah Bennett Safety Concern.
I hit send.
Now, I had the medical backing, the video evidence, and the legal paper trail. But as I stared out the diner window into the dark street, my phone suddenly buzzed on the table.
It was a text message from an unknown number.

I know where you are, Lauren. Bring Hannah home right now, or I release the medical records I just fabricated showing you attempted to self-harm tonight. Let’s see who the judge believes when CPS comes to take our baby away.
Brandon hadn't just been waiting at home. He was actively coming for us.
