Chapter 10 - Confrontation in the Dark

A cold wave of panic washed over me, but I forced myself to stay calm. Brandon was bluffing, trying to use fear to force me back into his control.

I grabbed my phone and dialed the local police precinct directly.

"911, what is your emergency?"

"My name is Lauren Bennett," I said, my voice steady and firm. "I am reporting an ongoing case of child abuse and domestic harassment. My husband, Brandon Bennett, has a history of violent assault, and I have direct video evidence of him physically abusing our three-month-old daughter."

"Ma'am, are you in a safe location?" the dispatcher asked calmly.

"I am at the Denny's on 5th Street, but my husband is tracking my location," I replied. "I need officers here immediately, and I need a child protection officer dispatched."

"Units are on their way. Stay on the line with me, ma'am."

Just as I finished the sentence, the headlights of a black SUV swept across the diner's front windows.

Brandon’s car.

My heart hammered against my ribcage. He had tracked my phone using our shared family account location feature.

I grabbed Hannah’s carrier, stood up, and moved toward the back exit near the diner’s kitchen.

"Ma'am? Stay inside," the dispatcher urged over the phone.

"He's here," I whispered, stepping through the service door into the rear alleyway behind the restaurant.

The night air was hot and dry. The alley was dimly lit by a single flickering yellow lamp above the dumpster.

Before I could reach my car parked nearby, a shadow stepped out from around the corner of the building.

"Running away wasn't very smart, Lauren," Brandon said, stepping into the light.

He looked disheveled—his shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his hair messy, his eyes bloodshot with an unhinged intensity.

I stepped back, holding Hannah close to my chest. "Stay away from me, Brandon. The police are already on their way."

Brandon laughed—a dry, bitter sound that echoed off the brick walls. "The police? What are you going to tell them? That our baby cries too much? That you're feeling overwhelmed?"

"I have the video, Brandon," I said, staring him dead in the eye. "August 17th, 2:14 AM. The camera in the nursery caught everything. I saw what you did to her crib. I saw how you grabbed her."

Brandon’s laugh instantly vanished. His face went completely pale, his posture freezing in place. "You... you put a camera in the nursery?"

"Dr. Lawson suggested it," I said coldly. "And I sent the video to him, to my lawyer, and to the police five minutes ago. It's over, Brandon."

A dark, terrifying expression took over his face. He realized his entire life, his reputation, and his freedom were slipping away in that exact moment.

"Give me the phone, Lauren," he commanded, stepping forward, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Give me your phone right now."

May you like

"No," I said, taking two steps back.

He lunged toward me.
