Chapter 8 - A Mother’s Instinct

Fifteen minutes later, I slammed my fist against the door of Florence’s small apartment on the north side of town.
Hannah was crying loudly in her car seat, sensing my intense panic.
The door swung open, and Florence stood there in her robe, her eyes wide with shock. "Lauren? What happened? What are you doing here at one in the morning?"
I pushed past her into the living room, setting the car seat down gently before turning on her. "I know about Sarah Jenkins."
Florence went deadly pale. She staggered back, clutching her chest as if she had been hit. "Oh, God..."
"I found the locked box in the garage," I said, my voice trembling with rage. "I saw the police reports. I saw the medical records. I saw the check you wrote to buy that poor woman's silence."
Florence covered her face with her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. "I had to, Lauren! He’s my son! If she pressed charges, his life would have been over!"
"He is a violent man, Florence!" I yelled, stepping closer. "And you brought him into my life! You let me marry him, you let me have a child with him, knowing what he was capable of!"
"He promised me he had changed!" Florence wept, sinking onto her sofa. "He went to therapy! He took medication! He swore to me that the anger was gone! But then... after Hannah was born... the sleepless nights, the crying... I saw the old Brandon coming back. The looks he would give her when she wouldn't stop screaming..."
My heart stopped. "What did he do to Hannah, Florence? Tell me!"
Florence looked up at me, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks. "One night... two weeks ago... you were sound asleep from exhaustion. Hannah wouldn't stop crying. Brandon went into the room. I followed him because I was worried. I saw him... he shook her crib violently, Lauren. He leaned down and yelled into her tiny face, gripping her shoulders until she bruised. I pulled him off her before he could do more. That’s why she was wearing the white sleeper the next morning—he had torn her pink one when he grabbed her!"
A horrific, blinding rage swept over me. The mystery of the missing pink sleeper was solved. The fear in my daughter's eyes was explained.
My husband had laid his hands on our innocent, defenseless three-month-old child.
"You knew," I whispered, disgust choking my throat. "You knew he physically threatened her, and you kept silent."
"I was trying to protect her!" Florence begged. "I stayed at your house every day so he wouldn't be alone with her! I threatened to go to the police if he touched her again! That's why he hated me being there!"
"You didn't protect her—you enabled him," I said coldly, picking up Hannah’s car seat. "And now, it’s over."

"Where are you going?" Florence cried, standing up.
"To end this," I said, heading for the door. "And if you try to stop me or warn him, I will make sure you go to prison right alongside your son."
