Chapter 11 - Unearthing the Past

Three weeks passed with a terrifying, unnatural calm.
Victor Costa was locked away in a high-security federal holding facility awaiting trial on federal racketeering, conspiracy, and murder charges, his syndicate effectively dismantled from the inside out by a combination of Rossi intelligence and federal indictments. The empire that had terrorized New York for decades had crumbled into dust.
Yet, Clara knew chapters from the past weren't finished just because the villains were behind bars.
Sitting at the reclaimed-oak desk in Dominic’s private study, Clara carefully unfolded the remaining pages of the ledger Vance had left behind on the night of the breach. The morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass, illuminating the neat, handwritten columns of financial transactions dating back twenty-two years.
The door clicked open, and Dominic stepped inside, carrying two mugs of black coffee. He set one down beside her elbow, leaning over her shoulder to look at the open ledger.
"You're still looking at that," he observed, his voice a low rumble near her ear.
"I'm looking for my father," Clara replied quietly, tracing a faded line of ink with her fingertip. "Daniel Evans wasn't just a corporate accountant for a mob boss, Dominic. Look at these entries from the months before he went into hiding. He wasn't laundering money for Costa's drug trade... he was embezzling it to fund a witness protection transition for three dozen women trapped in Costa's trafficking rings."
Dominic went completely still. He placed his hands on the edge of the desk, leaning over her to study the columns more closely. His brow furrowed.
"Are you sure?"
"Look at the routing numbers," Clara pointed, her eyes shining with sudden, vindicated pride. "These accounts don't lead to offshore tax havens in the Caymans. They lead straight to safe houses, false identity brokers, and educational trust funds set up for girls who managed to escape Costa's clubs."
Clara looked up, meeting Dominic's stunned gaze. "My father wasn't a criminal running away with stolen loot. He was a whistleblower who stole the monster's fortune to save innocent lives."
Dominic stared at her for a long moment, a slow, profound respect settling deep into his dark eyes. He reached out, gently cupping the back of her neck and pulling her up into a standing embrace.
"Then it looks like," Dominic murmured against her hair, "your father was a much better man than either of us ever knew."
Before Clara could reply, the secure intercom on the desk chimed softly.
Enzo’s voice came through, crisp and urgent. "Boss. You need to look at the front security feed. We have an unexpected delivery at the private elevator."

Dominic pulled back, his brow tightening into a suspicious scowl. "Who?"
"Not an enemy," Enzo said, sounding genuinely baffled. "It’s a notary public. Carrying a sealed package from the Federal District Court. And it’s addressed exclusively to Mrs. Clara Rossi-Costa."
