Chapter 6 - The Midnight Confession

The penthouse grew dark as midnight settled over Manhattan, painting the floor-to-ceiling glass windows with the amber and neon reflections of the city below.

Clara couldn't sleep. The ghost of Daniel Evans whispered in the dark corners of her mind, mixing with the heavy weight of the silver ring on her finger. Restless and suffocated by the sprawling emptiness of the guest suite Dominic had reluctantly assigned her, she padded quietly across the hardwood floors toward the kitchen to grab a glass of water.

As she passed the master study, she noticed a thin strip of golden light spilling across the hallway carpet.

The door was ajar.

She paused, her bare feet making no sound against the Persian rug. Inside, Dominic sat behind a massive reclaimed-oak desk. He had shed his suit jacket entirely; his black shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, exposing the intricate, dark-and-gray tattoos crawling up his forearms. He was staring down at an open leather-bound journal—the very ledger Vance had mentioned.

"You're not sleeping," Dominic said without looking up, his deep voice carrying easily across the quiet room.

Clara pushed the door open the rest of the way, leaning against the doorframe. "Neither are you. Hard to sleep when you find out your entire life was a witness protection cover story orchestrated by the city's reigning mafia royalty."

Dominic finally looked up. His dark eyes were shadowed with exhaustion, the harsh desk lamp highlighting the sharp, uncompromising lines of his face. He closed the ledger slowly, covering the names of the dead.

"Come here," he said softly. It wasn't an order. It was an invitation.

Clara hesitated, then walked slowly across the room, stopping just an arm's length from his desk. "Are you going to kill him?"

"Victor Costa?" Dominic leaned back in his leather chair, resting his forearms on the armrests. "If he comes after you? Yes. Without hesitation."

"And what about me?" Clara asked, her voice dropping to a vulnerable whisper. "Am I just a pawn in your game of chess against Costa? If this marriage is just a legal shield, when the war is over... what happens to us?"

Dominic stood up. He was taller than her, imposing and solid, yet the way he looked at her lacked all the armor he wore for the rest of the world. He closed the distance between them in two long strides, his large hands coming up to gently cup her face. His thumbs brushed softly against her cheekbones.

"From the moment I saw you step in front of my mother's path in that ballroom, you stopped being a pawn," Dominic murmured, his voice thick with an intensity that stole the air from her lungs. "I didn't plan for you, Clara. You wrecked every wall I spent ten years building. If you want out the moment this is over, the papers are drawn up. You can walk away free."

He paused, his dark gaze searching her eyes as his thumb traced her lower lip.

"But I am praying to every god in heaven that you burn those papers instead."

Before Clara could answer, before her racing heart could process the raw confession hanging between them, the sharp, shrill ring of a secure satellite phone shattered the quiet of the study.

Dominic's expression froze. The vulnerable man vanished in a heartbeat, replaced instantly by the lethal boss of the Rossi empire. He pulled his hands away, snatched up the receiver, and listened for three seconds.

"Talk to me, Enzo."

Enzo’s voice crackled through the speaker, distorted by encryption. "Boss. We have a breach. Costa’s men just hit the safe house where we stashed Vance's lawyer. And they left a message on the front gate."

Dominic's eyes locked onto Clara's. "What message?"

"A wedding invitation," Enzo said grimly. "Addressed to Mrs. Clara Rossi. Performance starts tomorrow night at midnight. Venue: Costa's private estate in the Hamptons."
