Chapter 5 - Cracks in the Armor

The silence in the penthouse after Vance's departure was suffocating.

Clara stared at the red-wax seal. Her hands were ice cold. The world she thought she knew—a quiet, ordinary life built on college loans, second-hand books, and the ghost of a tired mechanic—had completely evaporated in less than seventy-two hours.

"Don't touch it," Dominic commanded, his hand shooting out to block her fingers inches before they brushed the envelope.

"He said my father's disappearance was orchestrated," Clara snapped, jerking her hand back. She looked up, her eyes blazing into Dominic's dark gaze. "By your family. Is that true, Dominic? Did your father kill mine?"

Dominic didn't flinch. He didn't look away. But the absolute stillness in his posture answered the question before he even spoke.

"Twenty-two years ago, New York wasn't big enough for both the Rossi shipping monopoly and Costa's drug and trafficking syndicates," Dominic said, his voice dangerously low. "There was a war. People died on both sides. Your father wasn't an innocent bystander, Clara. He was Costa’s chief financial officer. He laundered the blood money that bought half the politicians in this city before he tried to steal a multi-million-dollar ledger and run."

Isabella turned away from the window, her face pale. "We gave him a choice, Clara. Walk away with a clean break and a new identity, or stay and burn with Costa's empire. He chose to run. We thought he took the money and fled to Europe. We never knew he hid in Queens with a baby."

"And you?" Clara’s voice shook as she pointed an accusing finger at Dominic's chest. "When you married me... did you know who I was then? Did you marry me out of protection, or was this just a preemptive strike to control Costa's bloodline?"

The words hung in the air like a knife blade.

Dominic stared down at her, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek. For a long, agonizing moment, he looked vulnerable—not the untouchable billionaire king of Manhattan, but a man standing on the edge of a precipice of his own making.

"I didn't know your real identity until the DNA results cleared this afternoon," Dominic said slowly, every word measured and deliberate. "When I put this ring on your finger in that hospital room, I thought you were just an innocent pastry chef's daughter who took a knife meant for my mother. I married you because I couldn't bear the thought of losing the only woman who had ever made me feel human."

Clara’s breath caught in her throat. The anger inside her sputtered, colliding with a sudden, terrifying wave of warmth.

"And now?" she whispered.

May you like

Dominic reached out, his warm thumb gently tracing the line of her jawline, sending a shiver straight down her spine.

"Now," Dominic said, his eyes burning with lethal intensity, "it doesn't matter whose blood runs through your veins. You wear my ring. You carry my name. If Victor Costa wants to touch you, he has to go through me first."
