Chapter 5 - The War Room

Across town, high above the city on the top floor of the Vance Financial Tower, the atmosphere was dead quiet, cold, and calculated.

Nora sat in a leather executive chair, wrapped in a dark blue silk robe. A soft IV drip was hooked to her left arm, delivering antibiotics and fluids under the watchful eye of a private nurse stationed in the corner. Next to her desk, a custom-built heated bassinet held little Emma, who was softly sleeping, completely oblivious to the war being planned around her.

Julian Vance stood in front of a giant floor-to-ceiling glass screen displaying the intricate corporate web of Vale Meridian Technologies.

"Harrison has spent the last six hours calling every major board member," Julian reported, scrolling through live wiretap summaries on his tablet. "He’s trying to secure their individual proxy commitments before Monday morning. He’s panicking, Nora."

"Let him panic," Nora said, her voice smooth and steady. She took a slow sip of warm tea, her face still pale from surgery, but her eyes burning with terrifying clarity. "What about the legal team?"

Julian stepped aside as a door opened. A woman in a tailored black suit walked into the room, holding a thick leather briefcase.

This was Eleanor Vance—Nora’s aunt and the chief legal counsel for Vance Global. She was a legendary corporate shark on Wall Street, notorious for dismantling corrupt conglomerates without ever setting foot inside a courtroom.

"Nora, darling," Eleanor said softly, walking over to kiss Nora’s forehead before glancing fondly down at baby Emma. "How are you feeling?"

"Better," Nora replied. "Is everything ready for Monday?"

Eleanor pulled a set of heavy, gold-embossed folders from her briefcase and laid them on the desk.

"Harrison Vale is walking straight into a meat grinder," Eleanor said with a cold, elegant smile. "He believes the draft documents he stole from your bag give him the right to seize the Aegis-7 patents under an emergency corporate asset clause."

"Which would work," Julian added, "if Vale Meridian actually owned the underlying research laboratories."

"Which they don't," Eleanor pointed out, opening the first folder. "Three years ago, when you married Caleb, you placed the entire Aegis-7 research infrastructure into an independent holding company called Aegis Innovation Labs. Harrison thinks Vale Meridian owns the labs because he’s been paying the operational leases for three years. What he doesn't know is that Vance Global owns the deed to the building, the equipment, and every single employee contract."

Nora traced her finger along the edge of the glass desk.

"When I married Caleb," Nora said softly, her memory drifting back to the humble apartment they had shared in their first year of marriage, "I wanted to believe he loved me for who I was. I kept my wealth hidden because I wanted a normal life. I wanted a husband, a home, a family built on trust. I spent three years letting his mother degrade me, letting his father treat me like a charity case..."

She looked over at the bassinet, her eyes softening as she watched Emma’s chest rise and fall rhythmically.

"...and the moment they thought I had something they could take, they threw me and my daughter out into the cold."

"They didn't just throw you out, Nora," Eleanor said, her voice hardening. "They committed criminal conversion of corporate documents, corporate espionage, and felony child endangerment. We could put Harrison, Vivienne, and Caleb in state prison by the end of the week."

"Prison is too easy for them," Nora said, turning her chair to look out over the city skyline. "In prison, Harrison becomes a martyr in his own mind. Vivienne tells her country club friends that they were framed by a crazy ex-wife. Caleb plays the victim."

She looked back at Eleanor and Julian.

"I don't want them in prison yet," Nora said, her voice dropping to a icy whisper. "I want them broke. I want Harrison to watch his empire dissolve piece by piece. I want Vivienne to lose her mansion, her jewels, and her precious social standing. And I want Caleb to realize that the moment he traded his daughter for money... he lost both."

Julian smiled darkly. "The board meeting is set for 9:00 AM sharp in the grand boardroom on the 40th floor of Vale Tower."

"Good," Nora said, leaning back into her chair as the nurse adjusted her IV. "Prepare my suit for Monday. Make sure it's black."

Eleanor leaned over the desk, her expression solemn. "Harrison has hired extra private security for the building on Monday. He’s anticipating a protest or a media leak regarding the Chairwoman’s arrival."

Nora’s lips curled into a slow, lethal smile.

"Let him hire an army," Nora said. "It won't save him."
