Chapter 8 - The Unmasking

A suffocating silence hung over the grand boardroom on the 40th floor.
Caleb sprang up from his leather chair, his face flushed red with a terrifying mix of embarrassment and fury. He slammed both palms onto the mahogany table, glaring at his wife.
"Are you insane, Nora?!" Caleb shouted, his voice cracking violently under the pressure. "You forged a security badge to get up here! You think because you stole a few company files from my bag that you can just walk into a billion-dollar board meeting and play make-believe?!"
He spun around to face the silent, bewildered board members.
"Everyone, please excuse this!" Caleb pleaded frantically, sweat pouring down his forehead. "This woman is my estranged wife. She suffered severe postpartum psychosis three days ago! She is mentally unstable and currently under a psychiatric hold order issued by our family doctor!"
Caleb reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a folded white paper, and thrust it toward the senior board member, Arthur Pendelton.
"Look at this! It’s a certified medical hold! She’s hallucinating!"
Nora didn't even blink. She didn't raise her voice. She simply stood at the head of the table, her dark eyes tracking Caleb with the cool, detached pity one might reserve for a dying insect.
Beside her, Eleanor Vance stepped forward. The legendary corporate attorney pulled a sleek silver fountain pen from her blazer, unscrewed the cap, and laid a thick velvet binder directly over Caleb’s psychiatric paper.
"Mr. Caleb Vale," Eleanor spoke, her tone dripping with razor-sharp ice. "If you mention that fraudulent document—or the name of Dr. Pembroke—one more time in this room, I will personally file federal obstruction, medical fraud, and corporate defamation charges against you before the market opens at 9:30 AM."
Caleb froze. His eyes darted to the signature at the bottom of Eleanor’s business card resting on the binder.
Eleanor Vance. Senior Managing Partner, Vance Global Legal.
"E-Eleanor Vance?" Caleb whispered, staggering back a step. "Why... why is Vance Global’s lead counsel here?"
Harrison Vale slowly gripped the edge of his desk. His heart was hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He looked at Julian Vance, who was quietly standing behind Nora with his arms crossed. Then he looked at Nora—her pristine black suit, her absolute composure, her utter lack of fear.
The puzzle pieces, scattered across three years of arrogant assumptions, suddenly slammed together in Harrison’s mind with the force of a freight train.
Vance & Vale Global Trust. The 81% founder’s shares. The late Arthur Vance...
"No..." Harrison breathed, his voice dropping to a horrifying, hollow gasp. "No... it... it can't be..."
"Let me introduce the Chairwoman properly, Harrison," Julian Vance announced, his deep voice carrying into every corner of the room. "This is Nora Arthur Vance. Granddaughter and sole legal heir to Arthur Vance. She is the founder of Aegis Innovation Labs, the principal owner of Vance & Vale Global Trust, and the holder of eighty-one percent of the voting equity in Vale Meridian Technologies."
A collective gasp exploded across the room.
Arthur Pendelton dropped his pen. The European investors leaned forward, their eyes wide in total shock.
"What?!" Caleb screamed, his brain entirely refusing to process the words. "That’s a lie! She’s an orphan from South Carolina! She ran a tiny, failing consulting business when I met her! I saw her bank accounts! She had nothing!"
Nora finally spoke. Her voice was calm, melodic, and chillingly absolute.
"I had everything, Caleb," Nora said softly. "Three years ago, I wanted to know if a man could love me for who I was—not for my family’s money, not for my patents, and not for my title. So I lived simply. I kept my inheritance in a blind trust. I let your mother insult my clothes. I let your father treat me like a lower-class parasite."
She looked at Caleb, her eyes hardening into black diamonds.
"And when I gave birth to your daughter three days ago, you showed me exactly what your love was worth. You watched your mother throw a three-day-old baby into a freezing rainstorm. You watched me bleed on your driveway. And then you searched my bag to steal my patents."
Caleb’s face turned from red to a ghostly, deathly white. His knees buckled slightly, and he had to grab the back of his chair to keep from collapsing.
"Nora..." Caleb stammered, his lips trembling violently. "Nora, baby... I... I didn't know... I was just following my father’s instructions! He told me—"
"Shut up, Caleb!" Harrison roared, his face contorting into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage.
Harrison slammed his fist on the table, turning his venomous glare toward Nora. The arrogant CEO was backed into a corner, but like a wounded predator, he prepared to fight dirty.
"So you’re Arthur Vance’s granddaughter," Harrison sneered, trying to force his authority back into the room. "So what?! You think wearing a nice suit wipes away corporate law? You came in here to brag, Nora? Go ahead! But as CEO, I have already executed Emergency Clause 4-B! The Aegis-7 patents have been absorbed into Vale Meridian as of 6:00 AM today! You can’t stop it!"

Nora looked at Harrison. A tiny, terrifying smile curled the corner of her lips.
"Read page four of the binder, Harrison," she whispered.
