Chapter 7 - The Grand Boardroom

Monday morning, 8:30 AM.
The lobby of Vale Tower was a storm of high-stakes corporate energy. Dozens of security guards clad in dark suits stood at every turnstile, checking executive badges with ruthless precision. Outside on the street, dark luxury sedans pulled up one after another, dropping off high-powered board members, private equity titans, and legal teams.
Harrison Vale stood near the entrance of the 40th-floor boardroom, dressed in a bespoke Italian suit, shaking hands with arriving directors. Caleb stood beside him, looking every bit the newly appointed Vice President.
"Harrison, what’s all this secrecy about?" asked Arthur Pendelton, a senior board member who represented a major European investment fund. "I got a call at 2:00 AM saying the Vance Trust was exercising personal attendance today. Is Arthur Vance’s family finally stepping out of the shadows?"
Harrison offered a polished, practiced smile. "The Vance Trust is simply conducting a routine audit, Arthur. Nothing to worry about. Today’s main focus is ratifying our acquisition of the revolutionary Aegis-7 patent matrix."
"I hope so," Pendelton grunted, walking into the boardroom. "If the Vance Trust pulls their capital out, this company isn't worth the paper our stock is printed on."
By 8:55 AM, all twelve seats around the giant oval marble table were filled—except one.
At the head of the table sat Harrison Vale. To his right sat Caleb. To his left was an empty, high-backed leather chair designated for the representative of Vance & Vale Global Trust.
The room buzzed with nervous whispers. The men and women around the table controlled tens of billions of dollars, yet every single one of them kept casting anxious glances toward that single empty chair.
Harrison checked his gold Patek Philippe watch.
8:58 AM.
"Alright, everyone," Harrison said, his voice commanding the room as he stood up and buttoned his jacket. "It is nearly nine o’clock. If the representative from the Vance Trust is running late, we will proceed with the agenda as scheduled. The first item on the table is the immediate execution of Emergency Clause 4-B..."
BANG.
The heavy double doors at the back of the boardroom swung open with sudden, absolute force.
The murmurs in the room cut off instantly. Every head snapped toward the entrance.
Two heavy-set security guards in black tactical suits stepped through first, clearing a wide path. Behind them walked Julian Vance, his expressions unreadable, carrying a sleek black leather document case. Beside him was Eleanor Vance, the legal shark of Wall Street, her eyes cold as flint.
And between them walked a woman.
She was dressed in a pristine, tailored black suit that screamed understated power. Her dark hair was pulled back into a flawless, sharp chignon. Her makeup was minimal, but her posture was royal, commanding, and absolute.
There was no trace of weakness in her step. There was no sign of pain.
Harrison’s smile froze on his face.
Caleb’s coffee cup slipped from his fingers, shattering against the polished hardwood floor, splashing hot liquid over his expensive leather shoes. He didn't even notice. His eyes were wide, bulging with sheer, paralyzing horror.
"N-Nora?" Caleb choked out, his voice cracking violently. "What... what are you doing here?! Security! Get this woman out of here!"
None of the security guards moved. In fact, the guards standing at the boardroom doors immediately turned, stepped outside, and pulled the doors shut behind them—locking the room from the outside.
Nora didn't even glance at Caleb. She walked with slow, deliberate steps toward the head of the table, the sharp click of her heels echoing through the dead-silent room like a death march.
Harrison stared at his daughter-in-law, his face turning a sickening shade of gray. His brain struggled to bridge the gap between the bleeding, shivering girl he had thrown into the rain three days ago and the terrifyingly composed woman standing before him now.
"Nora..." Harrison stammered, his powerful voice crumbling into a pathetic raspy whisper. "You... you can't be here. This is a private executive session of Vale Meridian Technologies."
Nora stopped directly behind the empty executive chair at the head of the table.
May you like
She placed both hands gently on the leather headrest, leaned forward slightly, and looked Harrison straight in the eyes.
"You're wrong, Harrison," Nora said, her voice smooth, quiet, and echoing with absolute authority. "This is my company. And you are sitting in my chair."
