Chapter 12 - The Will Revealed

One week later, the probate court of New York convened for an extraordinary closed-door hearing.
Arthur Sterling, Julian's late grandfather, had established a secret secondary trust before his death twenty years ago. The document, locked in an offshore vault in Geneva, had been retrieved by my father's investigators.
Julian was brought into the courtroom in orange scrubs, his wrists and ankles shackled to a waist chain. His hair was greasy, his eyes hollow.
The probate judge adjusted his glasses and opened the sealed brass envelope.
"In the matter of the Arthur Sterling Maritime Trust," the judge read aloud. "The testator explicitly decreed that should the male heirs of the Sterling bloodline engage in criminal conduct or squander the family assets through reckless negligence, the entirety of the ancestral estate, including all land patents and maritime trademarks, shall bypass Julian Sterling completely."
Julian gasped, rattling his chains. "What?! Who gets it?!"
"The trust transfers in its entirety to the firstborn grandchild of the legitimate line," the judge continued. "Namely, Lily Sterling-Vance, under the sole legal guardianship of her mother, Clara Vance."
Julian collapsed into his chair, his head hitting the defense table.
