Chapter 13 - The Echo of the Past

Six months after Claire took the helm as CEO of Mercer Global, the company’s stock reached an all-time high. Under her direction, the pharmaceutical distribution network was completely overhauled with military-grade encryption, ensuring that every life-saving drug reached underserved communities across three continents without fear of cartel interference.

Yet, true power often attracts the ghosts of those who built the foundation.

In a quiet private dining room overlooking the Hudson River, Julian Mercer sat across from an old acquaintance—Senator Thomas Vance, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and a man who had known Claire’s father long before Julian adopted her.

"She’s brilliant, Julian," Senator Vance said, swirling the dark amber bourbon in his glass. "The board is eating out of her hand. The SEC dropped every investigation into Vale Logistics' former assets. But you know why I asked to see you tonight."

Julian remained unmoving, his posture relaxed but his grey eyes razor-sharp. "The military medical contract, Thomas?"

"It’s worth three billion dollars," Vance replied softly, leaning across the white linen tablecloth. "And there are people in Washington who aren't comfortable with a thirty-two-year-old woman holding the operational keys to defense-level logistical infrastructure. Especially given what her late father was working on before his plane went down twenty-eight years ago."

Julian’s hand froze slightly on the stem of his wine glass.

The plane crash that killed Claire’s parents had always been officially ruled an engine failure caused by severe icing over the Allegheny Mountains. But Julian had spent nearly three decades suspecting otherwise.

"Her father was a brilliant engineer, Thomas," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous warning tone. "He was my best friend. Do not bring his memory into political maneuvering."

"I'm not maneuvering, Julian. I'm warning you," Vance whispered. "Before Richard Vale—Ethan's uncle—was ousted from the board during your purge, he filed a sealed deposition with the Department of Defense. He claimed that Claire’s father left behind an encrypted sovereign ledger detailing clandestine defense trade routes. Richard claimed that ledger is what Ethan was actually trying to steal from Claire's briefcase the day he pushed her."

Julian’s jaw tightened. The charcoal leather briefcase Ethan had carried into the hospital that fateful afternoon hadn't just contained fraudulent divorce papers and cartel contracts—it had contained an old, ironclad secret that went back to the very foundation of the Mercer family legacy.

"Ethan didn't get the ledger," Julian stated calmly.

"No," Vance agreed, looking deeply into Julian’s eyes. "Because you took it out of the briefcase before security turned it over to Detective Miller."

Julian slowly took a sip of his wine, saying nothing. His quiet silence was more powerful than any denial.

"Whoever holds that ledger controls the supply routes for half the defense contractors on the East Coast, Julian," Vance urged. "There are people far more dangerous than Ethan Vale or Nikolai Petrov who know it exists. If they realize Claire has inherited her father's key... they won't try to buy her out. They will try to eliminate her."

Julian set his glass down with a quiet, solid thud.

"Let them try," Julian said softly, a cold shadow falling over his eyes. "I spent twenty-eight years burying the men who killed her parents. I have plenty of room left in the ground."
