Chapter 2 - The Documents in the Shadow

Trauma Suite 4 was a storm of clinical precision.

Nurses moved in synchronized rhythm, setting up IV lines, prepping ultrasound transducers, and attaching telemetry pads to Claire's pale skin. The rhythmic, mechanical whoosh-whoosh of the fetal heart monitor echoed through the room, filling the space with an anxious pulse.

132 beats per minute.

It was fast, slightly erratic, but present.

Claire lay on the stainless-steel bed, staring up at the harsh white ceiling. Her left shoulder throbbed where it had struck the wall, but her mind was entirely focused on the warm gel being spread over her belly.

The heavy sliding doors opened, and Dr. Aris Thorne—Mercer Memorial’s top maternal-fetal specialist—stepped into the room, followed closely by Julian, who had stripped off his surgical gown and donned a sterile white coat.

"Talk to me, Aris," Julian commanded quietly, standing at the head of Claire's bed and placing a warm, steady hand on her forehead.

Dr. Thorne swept the ultrasound probe across Claire's lower abdomen. The black-and-white image on the screen shifted, showing the faint outline of a tiny spine, a curled arm, and a miniature heart fluttering like a trapped hummingbird's wing.

"Placental abruption," Dr. Thorne said, his voice grave as he measured a dark shadow near the wall of the uterus. "It's a partial separation. Grade 1. The impact caused a shear force, Claire. The bleeding is contained for now, but any sudden spike in blood pressure or another uterine contraction could trigger a full detachment."

Claire breathed out slowly, her eyes tracking the tiny image on the screen. "And the baby?"

"He's stressed, but his airway is clear, and the cord flow looks stable," Dr. Thorne replied, glancing at Julian. "We need absolute bed rest. High-dose progesterone, IV fluids, and continuous monitoring. If that abruption expands by even two millimeters, we are doing an emergency C-section tonight."

Julian nodded once. "Understood. Make sure this floor is restricted. No one enters without my personal clearance. I want two off-duty officers posted outside this door round the clock."

"Already done, Chief," Thorne said, gently wiping the gel off Claire's belly before moving to adjust the IV drip.

Once the staff cleared the room, leaving only the quiet humming of the life-support machines, Julian pulled a chair up to the side of the bed. He looked older now—the sharp adrenaline of the corridor confrontation fading, revealing the tired eyes of a godfather who had nearly lost the only family he had left.

"Tell me everything, Claire," Julian said softly. "Not the polished version you give your attorneys. The truth."

Claire turned her head toward him, her lips pale. "Ethan has been bleeding Vale Logistics dry for the past eight months."

Julian’s eyebrows narrowed. "Bleeding it? The quarterly earnings were up twelve percent last week."

"Fake ledgers," Claire said, her voice dropping into a cold, lethal whisper. "He opened offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands under a shell company called Vanguard Apex. Vanessa isn't just his mistress, Julian. Her brother owns the shell corporation."

Julian’s eyes darkened. "He’s laundering money through his own logistics network."

"It’s worse than that," Claire continued, reaching into the pocket of her hospital gown. She pulled out a small, metallic micro-SD card—hidden beneath her thumbnail until now. "I downloaded the primary server logs from his personal terminal while he was at the charity gala last night. Ethan isn't just stealing from his shareholders. He’s using Vale Logistics’ Mercer Contract to move unregistered pharmaceutical compounds out of the country."

Julian went completely still.

Mercer Pharmaceuticals was his life’s work. A company dedicated to creating low-cost, life-saving cardiac medication for third-world countries. If Ethan was using those supply chains for illegal drug trafficking, it wouldn't just destroy Vale Logistics—it would drag the Mercer name through the mud of a federal indictment.

"He found out I had the data this morning," Claire whispered. "He brought Vanessa to force me into signing an emergency divorce agreement. The papers in his briefcase... they had a clause transferring all my inherited stock in Mercer Systems over to him in exchange for dropping a non-existent fraud suit against my father’s estate."

"He tried to frame your late father?" Julian’s voice was dangerously low.

"He tried to destroy everything," Claire said, tears finally brimming in her eyes—not from pain, but from the brutal humiliation of having trusted a monster for five years. "He thought if I signed, he could push me out, claim I was mentally unfit due to pregnancy complications, and take control of my board seat."

Julian took the micro-SD card from her hand. He held it tightly between his thumb and forefinger, as if feeling the weight of the evidence that would destroy Ethan Vale forever.

"He made a fatal mistake, Claire," Julian murmured, standing up and leaning over to kiss her forehead. "He forgot who built the ground he walks on."

At that exact moment, the heavy glass door of the trauma suite creaked open.

Chief Security Officer Vance stepped in, holding the biometric charcoal briefcase that had been confiscated from Ethan just moments ago.

"Dr. Mercer," Vance reported quietly. "We have Mr. Vale in the holding room on Floor 2. He's demanding to speak with his attorney, and Miss Cole is threatening to call her father's legal team."

"Let them call whoever they want," Julian said calmly, taking the briefcase from Vance. "Has Detective Miller arrived?"

"He just pulled into the ambulance bay," Vance replied. "And sir... we ran a quick background check on the vehicle Ethan Vale arrived in. It wasn't his company car. It’s registered to a private security firm owned by the Russian syndicate in North Brooklyn."

Claire’s breath hitched. Julian’s jaw tightened into a hard, unforgiving line.

The drama was no longer just about a failed marriage or a bitter corporate betrayal. Ethan Vale hadn't just pushed his wife—he had invited wolves into Julian Mercer's kingdom.

Julian turned to Vance, his eyes flashing with a cold, ruthless light.

"Tell Detective Miller to hold off on the arrest for thirty minutes," Julian commanded. "I want to have one final conversation with my son-in-law."
