Chapter 4 - The Whispering Pulse

Inside Trauma Suite 4, the atmosphere was suffocatingly quiet.

The mechanical rhythmic pulse of the fetal heart monitor filled the room: beat... beat... beat...

Claire lay motionless, her arm hooked up to a continuous IV line carrying magnesium sulfate to prevent further uterine contractions. Her face was pale, but her dark eyes were fixed on the clear liquid dripping steadily into her vein.

The door clicked open, and Julian entered. The harsh, angry light that had filled his eyes in the holding room was completely gone, replaced by a deep, weary tenderness.

"It's done," Julian said softly, pulling a chair beside her bed and taking her free hand into his large, warm palms. "Ethan and Vanessa are in police custody. The state prosecutor is personally handling the bail hearing. I guaranteed he won't see daylight anytime soon."

Claire let out a long, shuddering breath. A weight seemed to lift off her chest, but the tension in her lower abdomen remained like a coiled spring.

"The business... the Mercer contracts?" she asked softly.

"Handled," Julian replied. "My legal team executed the emergency clause in our contract with Vale Logistics. We assumed full operational control thirty minutes ago. The board voted unanimously to appoint an interim CEO."

He looked down at her belly, where the pink ultrasound transducer was held in place by an elastic strap.

"How are you feeling, petite?"

"The pressure comes and goes," Claire whispered. "Every time I close my eyes, I hear the sound of Vanessa laughing. I see Ethan's face... he looked at me like I was nothing, Julian. Like five years of marriage meant nothing."

Julian's hand tightened around hers. "He is a small man who sought power by standing on your shoulders, Claire. You were always too good for him. Your father knew it, I knew it, and deep down, Ethan knew it too. That's why he tried to break you."

Suddenly, the fetal monitor speaker emitted a sharp, erratic stutter.

Beat... beat... beat-beat... ------

The steady rhythm broke into a high-pitched, continuous alarm.

The screen flashed bright red. The baby's heart rate, which had been holding at 130 beats per minute, suddenly plunged to 85.

"Julian!" Claire cried out, her hand violently clamping onto his wrist as a wave of excruciating, sharp pain tore through her lower abdomen. "It hurts! Julian, something broke!"

In less than three seconds, the trauma suite doors burst open.

Dr. Aris Thorne rushed in, followed by three scrub nurses.

"Fetal bradycardia!" Thorne barked, slamming his hand onto the emergency wall panel. "Placental abruption is progressing! She's having a full detachment!"

"Get the crash cart!" Nurse Ramirez shouted, ripping off the top sheets.

Blood—dark and heavy—was pooling rapidly at the foot of the bed.

Julian stood up immediately, his medical instinct instantly overriding his emotional grief. He leaned over Claire, holding her face in both of his hands, forcing her to look directly into his eyes.

"Claire! Look at me!" Julian commanded, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakable authority. "Look at me, Claire. Do not look at the monitors."

"Julian... my baby... save my baby!" she sobbed, tears spilling over her pale cheeks as the contraction doubled her over in agony.

"I built this hospital for you," Julian swore, his thumb gently wiping away her tears. "I have never lost a patient I promised to protect. I am not starting with my grandchild. Do you hear me?"

"Operating Room 1 is ready!" Dr. Thorne called out, pushing the bed's locking mechanism down. "We have to move NOW! Emergency C-section!"

"I'm coming with you," Julian stated coldly.

"Julian, you're family," Thorne said, hesitation clear in his eyes. "Hospital policy—"

"I OWN THIS HOSPITAL!" Julian roared, a sound so fierce it silenced every nurse in the corridor as they pushed the bed out into the hallway at a dead sprint. "I am performing the primary assist! Get the surgical team prepped!"

The doors to the surgical wing slammed open.

Lights flashed overhead in a frantic blur as the gurney flew down the hallway. Claire held onto Julian's hand with every ounce of strength she had left, her vision dimming at the edges as the pain threatened to pull her under.

As they reached the double doors of Operating Room 1, Julian pulled on his mask and surgical cap in one fluid movement. His eyes were cold steel, focused entirely on the fight ahead.

"Prepare for rapid general anesthesia!" Dr. Thorne yelled as they transferred Claire to the operating table.

"Julian..." Claire's voice was a faint whisper as the oxygen mask was placed over her face. "Promise me..."

May you like

"He will breathe, Claire," Julian promised, stepping up to the operating table, picking up the scalpel, and looking down at his goddaughter. "I give you my life on it."

The anesthesia took effect, and Claire's eyes drifted shut into complete blackness—just as the first incision was made.
