Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Ledger

Six weeks had passed since the night Mercer Memorial nearly became a graveyard for the Mercer bloodline.
Inside the glass-walled nursery of the Mercer Estate in Greenwich, the soft, rhythmic hum of a smart bassinet filled the room. Little Leo, now weighing a healthy seven pounds, slept contentedly in a white velvet onesie.
Claire stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the autumn fog roll across the sprawling, green grounds. She wore a tailored ivory pantsuit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail. The pale, fragile woman who had been pushed down a hospital corridor was gone, replaced by a sharp-eyed heiress who had stepped directly into the power vacuum left by Vale Logistics.
The heavy mahogany doors clicked open. Julian walked in, carrying two blue leather folders under his arm.
"He’s asleep?" Julian asked softly, stepping over to glance at his grandson with an affectionate soften in his sharp posture.
"Just went down," Claire murmured, turning to him. "What do the forensic accountants have to say?"
Julian opened the first folder on the granite nursery island. "We’ve officially absorbed eighty-four percent of Vale Logistics’ infrastructure. The rebranding to Mercer Global Supply will be announced at the shareholder gala on Thursday. But..." He paused, his expression hardening. "...Ethan left a poison pill behind."
Claire’s eyes narrowed. "What kind of poison pill?"
"A phantom debt," Julian said, pointing to a highlighted sequence of transactions. "Two days before he pushed you in the hallway, Ethan authorized a fifty-million-dollar emergency credit line guaranteed by Mercer Medical stock. The creditor isn't a bank. It’s an offshore private equity firm called Aegis Kronos."
Claire leaned over the island, running her finger down the column of figures. "Aegis Kronos... that’s the primary front for the Petrov Syndicate out of New York."
"Precisely," Julian said. "The loan comes due in forty-eight hours. If we don't clear fifty million dollars in cash or yield control of the Eastern distribution hubs, they have the legal right to seize the shares Ethan put up as collateral."
"Ethan didn't just try to steal my stock," Claire realized, her voice dropping into an icy whisper. "He pledged my board seat to a criminal syndicate to cover his personal gambling and money laundering debts."
"They think they can corner us, Claire," Julian said, his jaw setting like concrete. "They assume that because I am a doctor and you are a nursing mother, we will quietly pay out fifty million dollars to avoid a scandal."
Claire slowly shut the folder, a cold, dangerous smile touching her lips.
"They don't know who they're dealing with," she said softly. "Ethan was small-time. If the Petrovs want to collect from a Mercer, tell them to come to the gala on Thursday."

Julian looked at his goddaughter, a spark of pride flashing in his gray eyes. "You want to confront Nikolai Petrov in a room full of federal judges and news cameras?"
"No," Claire replied, her dark eyes flashing with lethal precision. "I want to ruin him in front of them."
