Chapter 3 - Lily Asked One Question

Lily looked at Richard.
“Why didn't you tell him?”
Richard opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Seven adults had spent nearly an hour explaining motives.
Reputation.
Money.
Family.
Fear.
Appearances.
Lily reduced everything to one question.
Why didn't you tell him?
Richard crouched.
“I thought I was helping.”
Lily looked at Nathan.
“Would you have wanted me?”
Nathan broke.
He knelt.
“Yes.”
No hesitation.
“Yes.”
Lily looked back at Richard.
“Then you weren't helping.”
That was it.
Seven years old.
Case closed.
I took Lily outside.
Nathan didn't follow.
Good.
He understood something Richard never had.
Lily got to choose the pace.
Later that night, Ethan found me alone on the hotel balcony.
“I'm sorry.”
I almost laughed.
“For which part?”
His face tightened.
“Most of it.”
He apologized for mocking my career.
For infertility comments.
For humiliating me.
For believing Richard without confronting me.
That last one mattered.
“I should've asked you.”
“Yes.”
“I was angry.”
“You were cruel before your father lied.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
That surprised me.
No excuse.
Then:
“Are you married?”
“No.”
“Seeing anyone?”
I looked at him.
“Don't.”
“Claire—”
“Don't turn one shocking evening into a fantasy where we discover your father ruined everything and therefore our marriage was secretly perfect.”
He looked away.
Good.
Because it wasn't.
Richard accelerated our divorce.
He didn't create every crack.
Ethan had hurt me.
I had withdrawn.
Infertility consumed us.
We stopped being partners.
That truth remained.
“Understood,” he said.
Then:
“Does Lily know about Marissa?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I've always told her she was adopted.”
“And Marissa?”
“They've met twice.”
He looked surprised.
“Why?”
“Because Marissa asked.”
“And Nathan?”
“Never.”
Until tonight.
Nathan respected that.
The next morning, he asked if he could speak to Lily.
I asked her.
“Do I have to?”
“No.”
“Can you stay?”
“Yes.”
Then she agreed.
Nathan sat across from her.
No dramatic promises.
No:
I'm your dad now.
He said:
“My name is Nathan. I knew your birth mother a long time ago. I didn't know you existed. I'm sorry I wasn't there.”
Lily asked:
“Do you have kids?”
“No.”
“Wife?”
“No.”
“Dog?”
Nathan blinked.
“A Labrador.”
“Name?”
“Walter.”
Lily considered.
“Can I meet Walter?”
Nathan laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
That was how their relationship began.
Not with biology.
A Labrador named Walter.
Marissa's situation was harder.
Ethan ended their relationship that morning.
Not because she had placed Lily for adoption.
Because she had lied about knowing Nathan.
Marissa accepted it.
She told him:
“I was afraid.”
Ethan replied:
“So was Claire.”
That surprised me.
Maybe he was learning.
Marissa eventually asked to speak to me.
“I didn't know Richard destroyed your marriage.”
“I know.”
“I should've told Ethan.”
“Yes.”
She cried.
“I loved him.”
“I believe you.”
That was what made everything tragic.
Marissa had loved Ethan.
But built that love on a missing chapter.

Eventually the missing chapter arrived.
It always does.
