Chapter 5 - The Second Wedding

Four years passed.
Lily turned eleven.
Nathan became part of her life.
Not Dad.
Nathan.
He attended school plays.
Birthdays.
Soccer games.
He never demanded a title.
Then one Father's Day, Lily gave him a card.
It said:
TO NATHAN, WHO IS ALSO SORT OF MY DAD BUT DON'T GET WEIRD ABOUT IT.
He cried for twenty minutes.
Lily was horrified.
“I told him not to get weird.”
Marissa rebuilt her life too.
She became a physical therapist.
Eventually married a man named Julian.
Lily attended.
So did I.
When Marissa introduced me to someone as “Lily's mother,” I saw something peaceful in her face.
Not painless.
Peaceful.
She had made a decision at twenty-three because she believed she couldn't give Lily stability.
She had carried guilt for years.
Watching Lily loved didn't erase that grief.
But it gave the grief somewhere to rest.
Ethan dated.
Nobody lasted long.
Then he met Grace.
Not dramatic.
Not glamorous.
A middle-school teacher who corrected his grammar and didn't care about the Mercer name.
They married when Lily was twelve.
I attended.
Yes.
My ex-husband's wedding.
Life has a sense of humor.
At the reception, Ethan found me.
“Five years ago, I humiliated you at a wedding.”
“Yes.”
“Tonight you're being suspiciously polite.”
“I've matured.”
“Terrifying.”
Grace joined us.
She knew the whole story.
Ethan had told her early.
That was progress.
No hidden chapters.
No carefully edited past.
Grace looked toward Lily dancing with Nathan.
“You built something pretty unusual.”
I smiled.
“We stopped trying to make it look normal.”
That was exactly it.
Our family included me.
Lily.
Nathan.
Marissa.
Julian.
Ethan at the edges.
Grace.
People connected through biology, adoption, former marriages, mistakes, and choice.

Richard would have hated the mess.
That made me love it slightly more.
