Chapter 7 - Richard's Final Apology

Richard lived another decade after his stroke.
He changed.
Slowly.
Not enough to undo anything.
Enough to stop causing new damage.
He apologized to Nathan.
Then Ethan.
Then Marissa.
Finally, me.
I accepted the letter this time.
He wrote:
I believed controlling information allowed me to control consequences. Instead, I controlled people.
That was the clearest thing he'd ever said.
He continued:
I destroyed Nathan's chance to know his daughter because I feared embarrassment. I damaged Ethan's marriage because I believed deception was preferable to disorder. I treated Claire's infertility as a weakness I could exploit because I assumed motherhood was something biology granted rather than love built.
I stopped reading there.
That line hurt.
Then healed something.
I finished.
Richard asked for no forgiveness.
Good.
I wrote back:
Thank you for telling the truth.
Nothing more.
He died the following year.
Lily attended the funeral.
Nathan spoke.
He didn't rewrite his father into a saint.
He said:
“My father loved his family. For much of his life, he confused love with control. Near the end, he learned the difference.”
Fair.
Afterward, Ethan stood beside me.
“Do you forgive him?”
“Some days.”
He smiled.
“Same.”

Forgiveness wasn't a switch.
Neither was grief.
