Chapter 15 - The Paper Trail

Judge Vance frowned, his bushy white eyebrows knitting together in deep skepticism. "Counselor Montgomery, that is an extraordinary and inflammatory allegation to level in a family domestic hearing. You had better possess unimpeachable evidentiary support, or I will hold you and your client in direct contempt."
"We possess the federal bank records, Your Honor," Claire replied with absolute calm. She walked to the clerk's desk, placing three identical sets of bound documents before the court. "Over the past twelve months, petitioner Evelyn Holloway has received exactly eighteen monthly wire transfers of twenty-five thousand dollars each into a private account registered at First National Bank of the Caymans."
Evelyn Holloway’s face drained of every drop of color beneath her thick foundation. "That’s my personal pension! That has nothing to do with this!"
"Quiet, Madam!" Judge Vance snapped, his gavel hovering.
"The routing numbers on those eighteen transfers," Claire continued, turning slowly on her heels to point a single, steady finger directly at Raymond Vance in the gallery, "originated directly from Apex Stratos Capital Management in Manhattan. Specifically, from the private discretionary account of Mr. Raymond Vance."
Flashbulbs flashed through the glass partition at the rear of the courtroom as reporters scrambled to take notes. Raymond Vance sat rigid as a stone gargoyle, his knuckles turning chalk-white.
"Furthermore," Claire stated, her voice ringing out through the vaulted chamber, "we present Exhibit D: an audio recording lawfully intercepted forty-eight hours ago pursuant to an ongoing Federal Bureau of Investigation grand jury warrant in the Northern District of Illinois."
Claire tapped an enterprise tablet on her desk.
The audio played through the courtroom’s high-fidelity public address speakers. Raymond Vance’s cold, aristocratic voice echoed off the plaster walls with crystal-clear fidelity:
"Tell Evelyn to demand the maximum visitation schedule. Tell her to cry for the cameras on the courthouse steps. If she forces Audrey Sterling into an open deposition, my legal team will tear into the Sterling Trust ledgers until the public shareholders dump their stock. When the share price hits forty, Apex buys the remaining debt notes and we liquidate the airline's fleet out from under her."
The silence that followed was complete, suffocating, and absolute.
Evelyn Holloway slumped back in her leather chair, her mouth hanging open in paralyzed horror. Her high-priced attorneys scrambled frantically through their notes, their hands trembling, whispering desperately to one another as they realized they had walked directly into an active federal ambush.
Judge Vance slowly lowered his reading glasses, his gaze shifting from the documents to Raymond Vance in the gallery, then down to Evelyn Holloway. The judge’s expression was carved out of pure, unadulterated judicial disgust.
"Mrs. Holloway," Judge Vance spoke, his voice vibrating with suppressed fury. "You took four hundred and fifty thousand dollars in foreign hush-money to drag your eight-year-old grandson into a fraudulent corporate hostile takeover?"
"I... I was just trying to help my son!" Evelyn stammered, bursting into real, unscripted tears of sheer panic. "Raymond said Tyler would get a pardon if we took the airline back! He said Tyler would be freed from Oxford!"
"Sit down, Mrs. Holloway," the judge commanded with icy severity.
Judge Vance turned his piercing gaze to Raymond Vance in the gallery. "Mr. Vance, I advise you to remain seated. Because I believe the gentlemen entering the rear of my courtroom are looking for you."

The heavy oak doors swung open once more.
Four armed Federal Marshals, accompanied by United States Attorney Marcus Reed, strode down the center aisle, their badges gleaming beneath the chandeliers.
