Chapter 8 - The Cleansing of the Columbus Estate

By Saturday afternoon, seventy-two hours after that historic landing at O'Hare, the winter sun blazed golden, warm, and glorious over the four rolling acres of our family estate in New Albany outside Columbus, Ohio.
The four-bedroom colonial manor—which had been purchased by my father’s trust twenty years ago—was an arena of quiet, methodical, sacred purification.
A commercial moving flatbed truck from Sterling Specialized Logistics was parked along the circular driveway.
Under the direct supervision of Senior Corporate Counsel Arthur Vance, Esq., two bonded commercial locksmiths had spent the morning replacing every single exterior lock, installing state-of-the-art biometric security panels and reinforced deadbolts.
On the driveway sat four heavy, industrial plastic storage crates, neatly sealed with security tamper-tape, labeled with bold black stencil ink:
PROPERTY OF TYLER HOLLOWAY // TO BE COLLECTED BY COURT-APPOINTED PUBLIC DEFENDER.
Inside those crates were his flight manuals, his golf clubs, his bespoke suits, and his luxury wristwatches—every single physical trace of the nine years he had spent living off my family’s wealth.
The master bedroom on the second floor had undergone an architectural resurrection.
The dark, heavy mahogany furniture that Tyler had chosen had been completely removed, replaced by warm, radiant white oak, sheer linen curtains that caught the winter breeze, and towering vases of blooming yellow garden roses, fresh eucalyptus, and fragrant white lilies that filled the air with clean, untroubled life.
In the backyard, beside the snow-dusted pine trees, Mason was sprinting across the lawn in his winter boots, barking with joyful, untroubled excitement as he chased Barnaby, our brand-new golden retriever rescue puppy.
Mason wore his favorite fleece jacket, with his grandfather’s gold pilot wings pinned proudly over his heart, his laughter ringing across the trees like music.
The heavy front door clicked open.
David Keller walked into the sunlit drawing room, wearing an open-collar wool sweater and comfortable slacks, carrying an unsealed, gold-stamped federal legal folio:
“Afternoon, Audrey,” David smiled warmly, stepping inside, setting the heavy folio onto the coffee table.
Barnaby came bounding through the back French doors, shaking snow from his golden fur, greeting the CEO with an exuberant whine.
David chuckled, scratching the puppy behind his ears, then turned to me:
“The Federal District Court in Chicago officially ratified the master emergency decrees forty minutes ago, Audrey,” David reported smoothly:
The Summary Annulment with Extreme Fault: The marriage between Audrey Sterling and Tyler Holloway was declared VOID AB INITIO // DISSOLVED WITH MAXIMUM PREJUDICE, legally expunging Tyler from all family trusts, insurance policies, and estate assets forever.
The Sole Parental Custody Award: Audrey Sterling was awarded SOLE LEGAL, PHYSICAL, AND MEDICAL CUSTODY of minor child Mason Sterling, permanently terminating Tyler Holloway’s parental rights with zero visitation privileges.
The FAA License Revocation: The Federal Aviation Administration officially revoked Tyler Holloway’s Airline Transport Pilot certification, permanently barring him from ever piloting a commercial aircraft in the United States for the remainder of his natural life.
David looked up from the documents, his eyes shining with deep, fatherly pride:
“You are completely free, Audrey. Not a single cent of your father’s airline remains in that man’s hands.”
I took a slow, deep, contented breath of the fresh pine-scented air.
The pain was gone.

The house was clean.
And my son was safe forever.
