Chapter 5 - The Descent into O'Hare

At 4:45 PM Central Standard Time, Flight 1482 began its final descent through the low, bruised winter clouds over Lake Michigan.
Inside the flight deck, the atmosphere was suffocatingly toxic.
First Officer Brian Miller sat in the right seat, his hands steady on the yoke, his jaw locked in cold, professional contempt. He had spent the last twenty minutes listening to Tyler pacing the narrow cockpit floor, muttering curses, tearing at his silk tie, splashing cold water from a bottle onto his gray, sweating face.
“Brian, you have to back me up,” Tyler pleaded frantically, leaning over the center console, his voice cracked with desperate terror: “If the union reps ask, you tell them the PA system malfunctioned! You tell them the cabin broadcast was an accidental open-mic transmission during an internal crew conversation!”
Brian Miller didn't turn his head.
He adjusted the altimeter, checking the approach plate for Runway 28 Center with icy, clinical detachment:
“Captain Holloway, the entire cabin heard you declare a divorce and propose to Seat Two-A. The passengers are already posting videos on Twitter and TikTok. I am not committing federal perjury before the FAA to save your gold stripes. Set flaps five and monitor the glide slope.”
Tyler slammed his fist against the cockpit bulkhead in raw, impotent rage!
Meanwhile, back in first class, Vanessa Vance had finally realized something was catastrophically wrong.
She had watched Tyler stumble back from the rear cabin looking like a condemned prisoner walking toward an electric chair. When she tried to touch his arm, he had shoved her aside with a snarl, locking himself inside the flight deck without a word.
Vanessa unbuckled her jumpseat, marching down the center aisle toward Row 28, her acrylic nails tapping aggressively against her tablet:
“Excuse me!” Vanessa snapped, stopping beside my row, glaring down at me with haughty, suburban arrogance: “Who do you think you are, upsetting my fiancé before landing?! Tyler is the pilot-in-command of this aircraft! If you harassed him, I will have airport security arrest you the second we touch down—!”
I slowly turned my head.
I looked at Vanessa Vance.
I didn't shout. I didn't reach for her hair.
I looked at her with the cold, dissecting stillness of an empress examining a fly that had landed on her banquet table.
“Vanessa,” I spoke softly.
Vanessa blinked, taken aback by the ice in my voice: “What?”
“Do you know what the legal definition of fiduciary grand larceny is under the laws of the State of Illinois?” I asked.
Vanessa sneered, crossing her arms: “What are you babbling about, you crazy woman—?”
“The three-carat Harry Winston diamond ring on your left hand,” I continued calmly, pointing a single, steady finger at her jewelry. “Serial number HW-8841-K. Purchased on November fourteenth at the Chicago boutique on Michigan Avenue for eighty-four thousand dollars.”
Vanessa froze.
The color began to fade from her heavily contoured cheeks: “How… how do you know that serial number?!”
“Because it was purchased using The Sterling Family Commercial Operating Account #0941,” I said, each word falling like an iron slab onto the floorboards.
“An account that belongs exclusively to me. An account that Tyler only had signatory access to as a secondary administrative convenience.”
Vanessa’s jaw dropped open.
Her manicured hands began to shake violently: “The… the Sterling account…? Who the hell are you?!”
From behind her, Brenda the flight attendant stepped forward, her voice carrying across the entire cabin with razor-sharp precision:
“This is Audrey Sterling-Holloway, Vanessa,” Brenda announced with deep, triumphant venom.
“The daughter of Captain Arthur Sterling. The majority shareholder and owner of this entire airline.”
Vanessa Vance stopped breathing.
The blood evacuated from Vanessa’s face with violent, catastrophic speed.
Her knees audibly knocked together beneath her tailored uniform skirt.
She looked at my cold hazel eyes, looked at Mason holding his drawing, and then looked down at the eighty-four-thousand-dollar stolen diamond on her finger.
A sharp, strangling squeak tore from Vanessa’s throat:
“The… the owner’s daughter…?”
Outside the windows, the heavy landing gear of the Boeing 737 deployed with a loud, mechanical, hydraulic thud:
THUNK-WHIRRRRR.
The aircraft crossed the threshold of Runway 28 Center, tires slamming onto the grooved concrete with a concussive screech of burning rubber:
SCREEECH!
Reverse thrusters roared to life, decelerating the seventy-ton airliner from one hundred and forty knots to taxi speed in thirty seconds.

Flight 1482 had landed.
And outside Gate B12, an entire army was waiting.
