Chapter 25 - The Florence Transfer

Seventy-two hours after the failed highway ambush, the doors of the United States District Court in Chicago were sealed under maximum federal security protocols.
Chief Judge Patricia Thornton sat behind her elevated mahogany bench, her expression looking as if it had been chiseled out of black marble. The courtroom was empty of spectators, reserved strictly for the sentencing expansion hearing under federal anti-terrorism and interstate racketeering laws.
Tyler Holloway sat at the defense table, but he was unrecognizable from the arrogant pilot who had once strutted down the aisle of Flight 1482.
He was bound in a specialized, high-security transport harness—an iron belt cinched around his waist, heavy steel cuffs locking his wrists against his ribs, and leg irons that allowed him to shuffle forward only six inches at a time. His hair had been roughly shaved to the scalp under prison quarantine regulations, his face bruised from his wild thrashing against the transport cage, his eyes hollow, sunken, and haunted by the madness of total defeat.
Beside him sat a trembling court-appointed federal public defender who had barely spoken three words all morning.
Across the aisle, sitting in sovereign dignity, were Brian Miller, Claire Montgomery, and myself. I wore an immaculate black cashmere dress, my father’s solid-gold signet ring resting proudly on my right hand, my gaze steady and unwavering as it pinned Tyler to his chair.
"In the matter of Tyler Holloway, Inmate Number 8841-B," Judge Thornton’s voice boomed through the vaulted chamber with terrifying finality. "The court has reviewed the undisputed forensic evidence regarding the attempted violent escape at Mile Marker 142, the unlawful solicitation of foreign mercenary forces, and the attempted abduction of minor child Mason Sterling."
Tyler began to weep—a wet, pathetic, broken sound that echoed off the empty pews. "Your Honor... please... I was confused... my heart... the medication made me paranoid..."
"Silence!" Judge Thornton struck her gavel down with concussive fury!
BANG!
"Tyler Holloway, you are a remorseless, predatory menace to society," Judge Thornton declared, looking over her spectacles with pure, icy contempt. "You have abused every privilege granted by this nation's aviation infrastructure, orchestrated armed assaults on federal marshals, and sought to terrorize an innocent child whose only crime was loving a fraudulent father. This court has no further patience for your theater."
The judge raised the sentencing order:
"Under the provisions of the Federal Dangerous Special Offender Act, your existing twenty-four-year sentence is hereby RESCINDED."
Tyler gasped, his head snapping up with a momentary spark of desperate, delusional hope.
BANG!
"You are hereby resentenced to LIFE IMPRISONMENT WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE."
BANG!
Tyler shrieked, his knees giving out as he collapsed against the defense table, the heavy chains rattling violently against the wood: "LIFE?! NO! NO! AUDREY, TELL HER! LIFE IS FOR KILLERS!"
"Furthermore," Judge Thornton continued, her voice rising above his hysterics, "the court orders your immediate, permanent transfer to the United States Penitentiary, Administrative Maximum Facility in Florence, Colorado—ADX Supermax."
BANG!
"You will be housed under Special Administrative Measures. You will spend twenty-three hours a day in an eight-by-ten soundproof concrete cell. You will have zero access to telephone communication, zero access to mail outside verified legal briefs, and zero physical contact with another human being for the remainder of your natural life."
BANG!
"Take him out of my sight."
Four heavily armed federal marshals hauled Tyler to his feet. As they dragged his dragging, chained boots toward the holding cell elevator, Tyler twisted his neck, his wild, bloodshot eyes locking onto mine for one final, desperate second.
"AUDREY! PLEASE! DON'T LET THEM BURY ME IN THE DARK! AUDREY!"
I did not flinch. I did not blink. I looked at him with the calm, serene finality of a woman who had walked through the fire and emerged holding the sky.

"You buried yourself in the dark two years ago, Tyler," I whispered across the quiet room. "Have a safe flight."
The heavy steel elevator doors slammed shut with a concussive, final CLANG, sealing Tyler Holloway away from the world forever.
