Chapter 12 - The Poison Hidden in Plain Sight

Damian read the message three times.

Elena grabbed the phone.

“What does she mean?”

“I don't know.”

“Call your doctor.”

They did.

Dr. Carter reviewed Damian's records.

“A cavernous malformation can bleed spontaneously.”

“So someone can't cause it?” Elena asked.

“Not directly.”

Relief started.

Then Dr. Carter added, “Certain medications can increase bleeding risk.”

Damian's face changed.

“What medications?”

“Anticoagulants. Some supplements. Anything affecting platelet function.”

Elena remembered something.

“Damian took migraine medication.”

Dr. Carter frowned.

“What medication?”

Damian named it.

“That alone wouldn't explain this.”

Elena's mind raced.

“After his first bleed, he received vitamin packets from work.”

Damian looked at her.

“What?”

“You used to keep them beside the coffee machine.”

“I thought HR sent them.”

Elena's skin prickled.

Damian searched old emails.

No HR record.

Then he remembered Martin personally recommending a private executive physician after the first neurological episode.

Dr. Halpern.

Records revealed Halpern prescribed Damian a supplement regimen.

One supplement contained high-dose ingredients known to affect clotting.

Dr. Carter became careful.

“This doesn't prove causation.”

“But it increased risk?” Elena asked.

“Potentially.”

Damian went silent.

Vanessa agreed to meet federal investigators.

Her cooperation agreement remained confidential, but Damian's attorney received limited information.

Martin had learned of Damian's diagnosis through Vanessa.

Years later, when pressure from the old financial scheme resurfaced, Martin worried Damian might review archived Crestline documents.

He began creating a plan.

Discredit Damian professionally.

Exploit his medical history.

And keep him medically vulnerable.

Whether Martin intended Damian's death remained legally uncertain.

But evidence showed he had paid Halpern through a shell consulting firm.

Elena felt physically sick.

“They were gambling with your life.”

Damian stared out the window.

“Yes.”

She waited for rage.

Instead he whispered, “I almost made it easier for them.”

“What?”

“If I had divorced you and gone into surgery alone…”

His voice failed.

Elena stepped closer.

“They wanted you isolated.”

“I did most of the work for them.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Don't confuse your emotional mistakes with their crimes.”

Damian nodded.

Federal agents arrested Dr. Halpern first.

Martin disappeared.

His passport registered no international departure.

Police believed he remained in New England.

Aaron Vale's company stock collapsed.

Board members resigned.

Banks suspended relationships.

Then Elena received a call from her building manager.

“Mrs. Brooks, someone entered your apartment.”

Her stomach dropped.

She called Damian.

Police arrived first.

Nothing expensive was stolen.

No electronics.

No jewelry.

Only one item was missing.

Margaret's letter.

Elena had brought a photocopy home after New Hampshire.

Damian went pale.

“They're looking for evidence.”

Police advised both to relocate temporarily.

Richard's home was also considered unsafe.

The three moved into a secure hotel under federal recommendation.

It felt absurd.

Damian, once emotionally incapable of sharing a bad day, was now sharing a hotel suite with his wife and father while federal investigators searched for a potentially dangerous former law partner.

At 3:00 a.m., Elena found Damian awake.

“You're supposed to sleep.”

“So are you.”

She sat beside him.

“Scared?”

“Yes.”

The answer came easily now.

Progress.

Damian looked at her.

“I'm more afraid for you.”

“I know.”

“I want to tell you to leave.”

“I know.”

“I won't.”

She smiled.

“More progress.”

He laughed quietly.

Then became serious.

“If Martin comes after me—”

“No.”

“Elena.”

“No speeches about sacrificing yourself.”

He sighed.

“You're difficult.”

“You married me.”

“Best reckless decision I ever made.”

Elena froze.

Damian did too.

The words had come naturally.

Almost like before.

She looked down.

“Our divorce papers are still sitting in the penthouse.”

“I know.”

“Half signed.”

“Yes.”

Neither spoke.

Then Damian said, “If this ends…”

“When.”

“If this ends, I don't want our next decision to come from crisis.”

Elena looked at him.

“Good.”

“I want us to decide what we are when nobody is bleeding, suing us, blackmailing us or breaking into apartments.”

She smiled.

“That's extremely specific.”

“We've had a strange year.”

She leaned against his shoulder.

For several minutes they simply sat.

Then Damian's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

Richard Brooks leaving the hotel earlier that afternoon with a federal agent.

Beneath it:

YOUR FATHER KNOWS WHERE I AM.

Damian stood.

“What?”

Elena read the message.

Then they both looked toward Richard's bedroom.

Empty.

His bed untouched.

On the table was a handwritten note.

Damian,

I'm sorry.

This started before you.

I need to finish my part.

Dad.

Damian grabbed his coat.

Elena blocked him.

“You're not going alone.”

He looked at her.

May you like

“I wasn't going to.”

And for the first time since they married, Elena believed him completely.
