Chapter 5 - The Call at 2:17 A.M.

Three nights after Elena returned to Boston, her phone rang at 2:17 a.m.

She was awake before the second vibration.

Damian.

Her heart stopped.

She answered immediately.

“Damian?”

Silence.

Then breathing.

Uneven.

“Damian?”

“Elena.”

His voice sounded wrong.

Slow.

Thick.

She sat up.

“What's happening?”

“My hand.”

“What about your hand?”

“Can't…”

The line went quiet.

“Damian!”

She threw on a coat while calling emergency services from another phone.

Damian was still in Baltimore.

She gave the hotel name.

Room number.

Medical history.

Everything.

“Stay with me,” she told him.

“I…”

His speech deteriorated.

“Don't talk. Just breathe.”

Elena remained on the line until she heard pounding on his hotel door.

Paramedics entered.

Someone took the phone.

“Ma'am, we're transporting him.”

“What hospital?”

Johns Hopkins.

Elena booked the first flight.

By sunrise, she was running through a hospital corridor.

Dr. Carter met her.

“He had another bleed.”

Elena nearly collapsed.

“Is he conscious?”

“Yes.”

“Can he speak?”

“Some expressive aphasia. Right-sided weakness.”

“Permanent?”

“We don't know.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Dr. Carter continued.

“This changes the risk calculation significantly.”

“Surgery?”

“As soon as he's stabilized.”

Elena entered Damian's room.

He looked furious.

Not at her.

At his own body.

His right arm rested awkwardly beside him.

He tried to say something.

Only fragments emerged.

“Shouldn't… come.”

Elena sat beside him.

“You really picked this moment to continue being annoying?”

His eyes filled.

She took his left hand.

“I'm here.”

He squeezed weakly.

“Don't.”

“Don't what?”

“Stay… guilt.”

Elena leaned closer.

“I am not here because I feel guilty.”

He looked at her.

“I'm here because I love you.”

His eyes closed.

“And I am still angry.”

A tear slid down his temple.

Elena wiped it away.

“Both things can be true.”

The next hours moved quickly.

Imaging.

Consent forms.

Neurological testing.

Richard arrived from Rhode Island looking pale and exhausted.

Claire arrived carrying a briefcase.

Elena stiffened.

Claire raised both hands.

“Work files. Nothing else.”

Damian attempted to laugh.

It sounded broken.

Dr. Carter entered with the surgical team.

“We're moving tomorrow morning.”

Damian looked at Elena.

Then struggled to form words.

“Paper.”

“What paper?”

He gestured.

Claire understood.

She removed a document from her briefcase.

Damian's medical proxy.

He had changed it again.

Elena stared at the page.

Her name appeared.

Elena Brooks.

Primary health care proxy.

Richard secondary.

She looked at Damian.

“You did this when?”

Claire answered.

“The day after you left.”

Damian watched Elena carefully.

Not asking forgiveness.

Not demanding anything.

Just letting her see that he had made a different choice.

For once.

Elena signed where required.

That evening, nurses prepared Damian for surgery.

He became quieter.

Finally Elena asked, “Are you scared?”

He nodded.

No performance.

No denial.

“Yes,” he managed.

She leaned forward.

“So am I.”

His eyes watered.

“I don't… want…”

He struggled.

Elena waited.

“Leave… you.”

Her chest tightened.

“You aren't leaving me.”

“Could.”

“Yes.”

She refused to lie.

“You could.”

His face crumpled.

Elena took his hand.

“But this is the difference between us and your parents.”

He looked at her.

“We're going to say the frightening things before it's too late.”

Damian swallowed.

She continued.

“If you wake up weak, I'll be there.”

Tears gathered in his eyes.

“If you wake up unable to speak, I'll learn how to listen differently.”

His fingers tightened.

“If you wake up angry, terrified or impossible, I'll remind you that surviving doesn't require doing it gracefully.”

His lips trembled.

“And if I don't?”

Elena's throat closed.

She pressed his hand against her cheek.

“Then you will still have died knowing you were loved.”

Damian broke.

For the first time since she had known him, he cried without hiding.

Not quietly.

Not politely.

Years of grief came out of him.

His mother.

His father.

His illness.

Their marriage.

Elena climbed carefully beside him and held him.

At dawn, orderlies arrived.

Damian looked at her before they wheeled him away.

Three words.

He forced each one.

“I need you.”

Elena kissed his forehead.

For once, she did not tell him he shouldn't.

She whispered, “I know.”

May you like

Then the operating room doors closed.

And Elena was left standing outside, holding the hand of a man who was no longer there.
