Chapter 14 - The Final Frequency

The moment Sarah’s bare skin made contact with the parasite cluster, an electric shock of pure agony surged up her arms.

It felt like plunging her hands into molten iron. The creatures shrieked—a deafening, high-pitched metallic wail that shattered every glass monitor screen in the control room simultaneously. Sparks rained down like fireworks, casting strobing shadows across the chaotic interior.

"Sarah!" Thomas screamed, struggling against Director Vance’s iron grip, but the infected Director held him pinned effortlessly against the wall.

Sarah gritted her teeth, tears streaming down her face as her skin blistered beneath the intense thermal and psychic feedback of the hive mind. The entities were trying to force their way back into her nervous system through her palms, whispering promises of surrender, of peace, of the endless, beautiful silence.

“...just let go… let the music play…”

"Never," she hissed through clenched teeth, her muscles trembling with the absolute limit of her physical strength.

With a final, roaring burst of defiance, she threw her entire body weight downward, wrenching the heavy industrial EMERGENCY BROADCAST SHUTOFF lever with both hands.

CLANG.

The heavy metal switch locked into the "OFF" position with a definitive, thunderous sound that vibrated through the entire mountain.

For a microsecond, nothing happened.

Then, the blinking red warning beacon on top of the massive transmission tower outside stuttered, flickered, and went pitch black. The low, subterranean hum that had vibrated through the ground for days vanished instantly, replaced by an absolute, profound, natural silence.

Director Vance froze mid-motion. The glowing crimson light pulsing along the left side of his body flickered rapidly, turned dull grey, and sputtered out. He let out a ragged, distinctly human gasp, his eyes rolling backward as he slumped unconscious to the floor.

The parasites wrapping around the control console convulsed once, turned to fine black ash, and dissolved into nothingness.

Across the room, Thomas collapsed to his knees, catching his breath as the heavy pressure lifting from his mind left him feeling lighter than air.

Sarah stood trembling over the master console, her hands scorched and bruised, staring down at the silent switches.

The broadcast was dead. The network was broken.
