Chapter 8 - The Sound of the Signal

The defeat of Sheriff Miller sent a visible shudder through the network. Down the hallway and out into the clearing, the low, subterranean humming sound stuttered, rising in frequency into an erratic, dissonant screech before stabilizing once more.

Thomas was back on his feet in an instant, completely unfazed by the collision with the coat rack. The silvery filaments on his shoulder were pulsing with an angry, pulsating crimson light now, shifting from their previous ethereal silver.

"You're only prolonging the inevitable, Sarah," Thomas said, his voice carrying that chilling, multi-toned resonance. He took another step forward, his movements no longer human, but calculated, algorithmic. "Every second you fight, the pressure builds. The brain tissue can only withstand so much friction."

Sarah leaned back against the wall, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The pain in her left ear was blinding, a white-hot spike driving directly into her temple. She could feel the parasite moving, its segmented body curling tighter against her eardrum, trying to force its way past the inner ear canal and into the cerebral cortex.

Just pull it out, a logical part of her mind screamed. Even if it hurts, even if it tears everything apart, pull it out before it reaches the brain.

Without a second thought, Sarah raised her trembling right hand, shoved her fingers hard into her left ear canal, and pinched down with every ounce of strength she possessed.

A raw, agonizing scream ripped from her own throat—a sound so loud and desperate that it drowned out the hum of the woods entirely.

Inside her head, something gave way with a wet, tearing sound.

She yanked her hand out of her ear, bringing it up to the faint light of the doorway. Clutched between her blood-slicked fingers was a second parasite, identical to the one she had pulled from Thomas earlier—writhing, pulsing, dark, and shrieking with that high-pitched, metallic violin-string noise.

For a second, the entire hallway went dead silent.

Thomas stopped in his tracks, his obsidian eyes widening slightly as he stared at the writhing creature in her hand. The collective hum from the woods outside cut out entirely, replaced by an abrupt, deafening void.

Sarah gasped sharply, the air rushing back into her lungs as the mental fog instantly evaporated from her mind. The voices vanished. The static cleared. She could think straight again.

"You... you pulled it out," Thomas whispered, his voice suddenly sounding distant, frail, and utterly human. The dark, pitch-black void in his eyes began to retreat, the warm hazel irises bleeding back into view as he staggered backward, catching himself against the wall.

May you like

"Thomas?" Sarah breathed, her voice shaking violently as she stepped toward him. "Thomas, are you back?"

Before he could answer, the creature in her hand gave one final, violent jerk—and emitted a sharp, human-sounding gasp before dissolving into a pool of black, iridescent ash that slipped through her fingers and vanished onto the floor.
