Chapter 15 - The Sound of Dawn

The first rays of golden sunlight broke over the eastern horizon of Blackwood Ridge, painting the jagged peaks of the pine forest in warm, natural hues of amber and rose.
There was no storm. There was no unnatural chill in the air.
Just the gentle, familiar rustle of the morning wind whispering through the pines, the cheerful chirping of sparrows returning to the branches, and the distant, normal rumble of a pickup truck driving down the valley road.
Sarah and Thomas sat side-by-side on the concrete steps outside the transmission facility, wrapped in warm wool blankets provided by the first responders who had finally arrived from the neighboring county.
Sheriff Miller and Mrs. Gable were resting in the medical tents set up in the courtyard, rubbing their temples, completely unaware of the lost days or the alien nightmare that had nearly consumed their town, remembering only a deep, dreamless sleep.
Thomas turned his head, looking at Sarah with a soft, genuine smile that reached all the way to his warm hazel eyes. He reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear, his touch tender and reassuring.
"How’s your ear?" he asked softly.
Sarah smiled back, leaning her head against his shoulder as she listened to the sweet, ordinary sounds of the waking world around them.

"Never sounded better," she whispered.
The silence that remained was no longer a threat or a cage. It was simply peace. And as they watched the golden sun climb higher into the clear sky, they knew that whatever darkness had tried to invade their lives had been silenced forever, leaving behind a world bright, loud, and gloriously human.
