Chapter 7 - The Frequency Shift

The rejection hit the air like an electric shock.
The collective humming sound outside faltered for a fraction of a second, dipping in pitch as if the massive, town-wide network had stumbled over an unexpected obstacle. Sheriff Miller’s expression hardened, the synthetic unison in his voice sharpening into a harsh, metallic edge.
"Rejection is inefficient," the Sheriff echoed, taking a heavy, deliberate step down the hallway toward her. "The channel will be forced open."
Thomas didn't speak. He lunged forward with terrifying speed, his hands outstretched, aiming directly for Sarah’s temples. There was no hesitation in his movements now—the polite, conversational facade had vanished, replaced by the ruthless, predatory efficiency of a hive mind protecting its propagation.
Sarah ducked beneath his reach, using every ounce of her remaining strength to shove hard against his chest.
The impact felt like slamming into a wall of solid steel. But the unexpected shift in momentum caused Thomas to stumble off balance, crashing hard into a wooden coat rack by the doorway. The heavy wooden pegs snapped off like dry twigs, sending coats and umbrellas scattering across the floor.
At the same time, Sarah felt a violent, agonizing wrenching sensation inside her left ear. The parasite had sensed her rebellion and was attempting to anchor itself permanently to her skull before she could expel it. A hot stream of blood trickled down her neck, staining the collar of her shirt.
She didn't scream. She couldn't afford to waste the breath.
With her vision swimming and pain firing down her spine, Sarah dropped to her knees, sweeping her right hand across the cluttered floor until her fingers wrapped around the heavy, iron base of a broken umbrella stand.
Sheriff Miller was already pivoting around, his heavy boots turning to close off her escape route, his hands reaching out to grab her shoulders.

"We only want to tune you," the collective voice hissed from his lips, terrifyingly close.
Sarah didn't hesitate. She swung the heavy iron stand upward in a violent, vertical arc, catching the Sheriff squarely beneath the chin. The impact produced a hollow, metallic crack that echoed down the hallway. The Sheriff’s head snapped back, his eyes rolling upward as his body went instantly limp, collapsing heavily onto the wooden floorboards like a discarded marionette whose strings had been cut.
