Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

In London, I sat at my sister’s dining table surrounded by stacks of legal documents, bank statements, and printed emails.
When Grant threatened to drain me financially, he wasn't exaggerating. During our eight years of marriage, he had subtly isolated me from my career as a senior graphic designer. He had convinced me to manage our home while he managed "our" wealth. When the divorce began, I discovered that almost every major asset—our Manhattan apartment, the Rhode Island summer house, the investment accounts—had been structured under corporate LLCs that I had no legal name on.
I had left America with less than fifteen thousand dollars in my personal savings account.
“He’s trying to starve you out, Sarah,” Caroline said, setting down two mugs of coffee. “He knows you can’t afford a long legal battle in two different countries. He’s going to use his money to drag this out until you give up.”
“I will never give up on Lily,” I said, my voice cracking with exhaustion. “I’d sleep on the streets before I let him take her back.”
My phone rang. It was Attorney Vance from Boston.
“Sarah, I’m calling with an update,” Vance said. Her voice was grave. “Grant’s attorneys just filed an emergency motion in Manhattan Supreme Court. They are requesting an immediate court order commanding you to return Noah to New York within 48 hours under threat of arrest warrants for contempt of court. Furthermore, they are requesting full emergency custody of Lily, claiming Mark is an unfit guardian.”
“What about the video?” I asked, terror gripping my chest again. “Didn't the judge see what he did to her?”
“The video proves emotional distress, but Grant’s lawyers are claiming it was staged by you and Mark to sabotage his wedding,” Vance explained. “In court, money and documentation speak louder than viral videos. Grant has hired a team of child psychologists who are willing to testify that Lily was ‘coached’ by you before she left.”
I covered my face with my hand. “It’s all lies! Every single word!”
“I know, Sarah. But we need hard, undeniable evidence,” Vance said softly. “We need proof that Grant didn't just hurt Lily emotionally—we need proof that he systematically lied about his assets, lied about his treatment of you, and used financial fraud to keep you silent.”
I sat up straight. Financial fraud.
Suddenly, a memory flickered in my mind—a cold rainy night six months before the divorce was filed.
Grant had come home late, drunk and panicked after a long phone call with his accountant. He had left his leather briefcase on the kitchen counter while he went to shower. I remembered seeing a black thumb drive attached to his house keys—a drive he always kept locked inside a small safe in his home office, a safe he warned me never to touch.
“Vance,” I said, my breath catching in my throat. “Grant kept a private, encrypted drive in his home office safe in the Manhattan apartment. He used to say it was his 'life insurance' policy against his business partners.”
“Do you have access to that safe?” Vance asked immediately.
“No,” I replied. “The apartment is locked, and Grant changed the security codes three weeks ago.”
“Then we have a problem,” Vance sighed.
Just then, a light knock sounded at Caroline’s front door. Caroline went to answer it, and a moment later, she walked back into the dining room holding a large, heavy yellow envelope that had just been delivered via international express courier from Boston.
On the front, written in familiar, messy handwriting, were the words: FOR SARAH. FROM MARK.
I quickly opened the envelope. Inside was a small, heavy silver metal object—a physical master key card to Grant’s Manhattan apartment, along with a piece of paper containing a six-digit code.

Below the code, Mark had written a short note:
Sarah, I went to Grant’s apartment yesterday under the pretense of picking up Lily’s winter clothes before he locked the doors. He doesn't know I cloned his safe key card six months ago when he asked me to store his emergency documents. Everything you need to burn his empire to the ground is inside that safe. Bring him down. — Mark.
