Chapter 10 - The Emergency Hearing

The New York State Supreme Court courtroom was packed to absolute capacity.

Dozens of reporters from major news outlets squeezed into the wooden pews, cameras flashing outside the frosted glass doors. The viral video of Lily had turned a private custody dispute into the most talked-about trial of the summer.

Grant sat at the defense table on the right, wearing a sharp charcoal suit. His nose was bandaged from our encounter in the stairwell, and his face was tense, but he still tried to project an air of calm authority. Beside him sat Vanessa, wearing dark sunglasses, and a team of four top-tier defense attorneys.

I sat at the table on the left, flanked by Attorney Vance and Mark, who had flown in from Boston early that morning. Lily and Noah were staying safely at a private residence under the care of court-appointed child advocates.

Judge Evelyn Richter, an elderly woman with a stern, sharp gaze, slammed her gavel down onto the wooden block.

“Order in the court!” Judge Richter announced, her voice echoing through the silent room. “We are here for an emergency motion regarding temporary custody, international travel restrictions, and cross-filed criminal allegations between Sarah Holloway and Grant Holloway.”

Grant’s lead attorney stood up immediately. “Your Honor, before we begin, we request the immediate arrest of the petitioner, Sarah Holloway. Last night, Mrs. Holloway unlawfully entered my client’s residence, physically assaulted him, and stole proprietary corporate data!”

A murmur ran through the courtroom. Grant looked back at the reporters, offering a subtle, tragic nod to the cameras.

Judge Richter turned her sharp eyes to Attorney Vance. “Mrs. Vance? How do you respond to these severe allegations?”

Attorney Vance stood up calmly, smoothing down her jacket. She did not raise her voice. She did not show emotion. She simply picked up a thick white binder from our table.

“Your Honor,” Vance began, “Mrs. Holloway did enter the joint marital residence—a residence she still holds legal access rights to under the pending divorce decree. She did so to retrieve evidence of massive, ongoing criminal fraud and systematic child abuse perpetrated by Mr. Holloway.”

“Objection! Speculation and slander!” Grant’s lawyer shouted.

“I have the receipts, Your Honor,” Vance said smoothly, handing the binder to the bailiff to present to the judge. “What you have in front of you is a certified forensic analysis of an encrypted storage drive retrieved from the residence. It contains evidence that Mr. Holloway has embezzled twelve million dollars through shell companies, manipulated tax filings, and paid private operatives to harass and destabilize his wife.”

Judge Richter opened the binder. As she flipped through the pages, her expression turned from neutral sternness to visible, cold disgust.

She paused on a specific document—a printed email chain between Grant and his private investigators detailing how to engineer my emotional breakdown.

Judge Richter slowly adjusted her glasses and looked directly at Grant over the top of her frames.

“Mr. Holloway,” Judge Richter said, her voice dropping into a chilling tone. “Did you authorize these actions against the mother of your children?”

Grant’s face turned white. He leaned in desperately to whisper to his attorney, but his lawyer looked equally horrified by the sudden mountain of undeniable evidence.

“Your Honor,” Grant stammered, standing up. “This... this drive was stolen! It’s inadmissible! She had no right—”

“STOOL SILENT, MR. HOLLOWAY!” Judge Richter barked, slamming her gavel down with thunderous force.

The courtroom went dead silent.

“I am an officer of the law,” Judge Richter stated firmly. “And what I am looking at is not merely a custody dispute. This is a mountain of evidence detailing corporate fraud, perjury, and psychological terror inflicted upon a mother and her children.”

She closed the binder with a heavy thud.

“I am issuing an immediate, sweeping order,” Judge Richter declared. “Grant Holloway’s parental rights regarding Noah and Lily Holloway are hereby SUSPENDED immediately pending full criminal investigation. Full, sole physical and legal custody of both children is granted to Sarah Holloway.”

I gasped, throwing my hands over my face as tears of overwhelming relief rushed out. Mark placed a supportive arm around my shoulders.

“Furthermore,” Judge Richter continued, pointing directly at Grant, “I am issuing an immediate restraining order. Mr. Holloway is to remain at least one thousand feet away from Sarah Holloway and her children at all times. And I am referring this financial binder directly to the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York for immediate criminal indictment.”

Two federal marshals, who had been standing quietly at the back of the courtroom, stepped forward and walked down the center aisle directly toward Grant.
